Yale spring update

Here’s a few observations from practice this week…

RB Candler Rich looked strong running the ball toward the end of practice on Wednesday… OL Beau Iverson looks like he has really bulked up. He’s closing in on 300 lbs now…WR Myles Gaines made an impressive catch over the middle…LB Victor Egu has lost some weight and is definitely moving faster…Overall, the defense looks improved.

Furthermore, CB Will Bryan and S Roger Kilgore have had strong spring campaigns. Bryan saw action in two varsity games as a freshman last year, while Kilgore, a freshman, played in one as well. They should give the secondary some depth and compete for playing time.

DE Earl Chism has also continued to make strides. Chism earned the team’s DL of the Year award last season.

DB Jason Alessi is managing to play both spring football and lacrosse. Alessi has four goals and three assists in 10 games for the Bulldogs this season. He stepped in for Spencer Rymiszewski and started five games on the football field as a freshman.

“It’s tough in the sense where there is a growth period in the spring and only so much he can do,” Tony Reno said. “But we’re excited he’s helping the lacrosse team win.”

K Blake Horn missed last season because of injury. Well, he’s back now and progressing. Expect him to be the Bulldogs kicker next season.

“He had a good day Friday and Monday,” Reno said. “He’s got the leg, he’s got the ability. He just needs to continue to get reps.”

Bryan Holmes remains Yale’s punter. He had 33 punts for a 39-yard average last season. That includes eight inside the 20-yard line.

Look for a story on Egu on Friday…

If Rich looked good running the ball then the defense is not very good.

Its pretty easy to see why Friedline chose to be in the IVY league. No practice, no running, no effort.

Friedline must have kicked sand in the face of poor 4:47 and taken his lunch money and his girl and his bike.

THIS MORNING AT PRACTICE VICTOR EGU DISPLAYED HIS QUICKNESS AT LB MAKING TACKLES. MICHAEL Siragusa MADE A NICE TOUCHDOWN CATCH ON A PASS FROM QB MORGAN ROBERTS. ALSO, CODY ARLEDGE, ANDERS HUIZENGA, AND BEAU IVERSON ARE GETTING MANY REPS ON THE O LINE. DITTO FOR KARL MARBACK ON THE DEFENSIVE LINE.

Chris; Can you are anyone else tell who the projected starting offense and defense are?

You can just look at the two deep from last year and basically figure that out. The question is who are the names that are NOT on that list from last year that seem to be making waves this spring?

It also looks like unless we have the most talented group of freshman coming in that we have had in years(which will be pretty tough given the last 2 classes that were brought in) there may not be as many of them playing heavy minutes this season.
