I'm sure he will state that "we are a young team" despite the fact that the only reason we are a "young" team is because HE is choosing to play HIS recruits over capable upper clansmen. we don't have to be a young team, so for him to keep using this as an excuse is ridiculous.

I wonder if Tony outlined his vision for the team (playing freshman recruits over experienced players) to the Search Committee. What is he going to do next year - play next year's freshman recruits? Yale was picked at least fifth in the Ivy League by preseason polls, based on the team that Tom Williams would have put on the field. Did anyone see this coming? Does Tony have any idea where it is going except downhill!!?

What is the basis for saying Coach Reno is not playing the best players? To claim this without any evidence is slanderous. Also, it should be noted that most of the freshmen are Tom Williams's recruits. By the way, I am not related to any of the freshmen.

If I'm not mistaken the freshman that are PLAYING in the game And some starting are ALL Reno's recruits.
Tom Williams was smart enough to know that freshman players NEED time to mature and ease into the college game. That being said young or old team, whatever Reno and his crack staff are doing.. IS NOT WORKING!

Using capital letters haphazardly does not help you prove your point.

Not sure who these "better" upperclassmen who are not playing are; Offensively you have the QB - we all know about that, a single freshman lineman who is seeing some time because the two-year starter ahead of him has struggled with some health issues, and Varga - and does anyone think he shouldn't be playing? Everyone else played, most as starters, last year. Defensively, it was clear the cupboard was going to be somewhat bare before Williams ever left. And the leaders on D - McHale, Dooley, Daffin, Bibb, Stottlemyre - are all seniors. Just don't see where there is all this talent rotting on the bench.

How about the two senior cornerbacks who never look for the ball on long passes in their directions and are positioned approximately 7 yds in front of wrs allowing them plenty of time to catch the football.

It is important to note that several of these freshman are Reno recruits. Yale did not require Coach Reno to honor the commitments it had made to student-athletes prior to his hire.

Players who are better (based on play) than the freshman who replaced them. Nick Okano, Brian Leffler, John Powers (pre-injury. Two of these people were starters this year, making plays and still lost their jobs to freshman.

Also has anyone taken note that Reno has switched to the 4/3 defense which Coach Williams ran. He is quoted as saying it fits his talent better. Given that Williams ran the 4/3 shouldn't he have been able to figure that out before he changed it.

The hardest thing to do when taking over anything is to resist making change for change sake, trying to put your stamp on everything. Because he has switch back he now has several players playing out of position such as EJ Conway who is cleary an athletic outside linebacker.

Sometimes the guy you are replacing is not has dumb as you think he is and you are not as smart as you think you are.

The biggest problem I see with this coach is arrogance and lack of honesty. He is either A; wanting to win with "his" guys; or B; believes playing the freshman who are at best as good as the people they are replacing has a bigger upside.

If he is looking to "fit his talent better" how do you explain the offense he runs? I'm with Walt on the "power running game." His playmakers are at running back, not receiver - his receivers are competent, no better (especially without Chris Smith) -they really don't get much separation, while his running backs and offensive line are very good. Isn't Varga's hundred yards a game whle running half the time proof of that? And with a frosh QB you want to put him in as few vulnerable situations as possible, not have him taking shotgun snaps on every play and throwing on every other down. If a kid is inexperienced and throwing three to four picks a game, there has to be something scheme-wise you can do to help him. Has he been under center once yet? And by the way, it really reduces the bad snaps issue to have him there as well.

Another one to add to that list is jackson liguori. Why is he not starting??? He is productive whenever he is in, and if caught several big catches last season. One of those being a long TD against the harvard DBs..... who was coaching them.??? Oh yah Reno.

I said that he said the 4/3 fit his talent better. It probably does. The problem is because of his arrogance and desire to come in and change everything, he was blinded to that fact and needlessly changed to the 3/4. Clearly they should have never changed from the 4/3 defense.

I agree that both backs have been very productive and the QB has been an interception machine and therefore he should be using the power running game.

But even as it relates to Varga who has been good and has shown promise, what did Cargill not do to loose his starting position? He was the starter when the season began and is just as good or better than Varga. That is where Reno wanting to play "his guys" or promises made to freshmen to come to Yale comes in.

It should be noted that in the Layfayette game Cargill on successive runs ran the ball over 40 yards inside of the Layfayette 10 yard line. He was then taken out for Varga and the drive stalled. Cargill was not showing signs of being tired. I would argue that Reno wanted Varga to score the touchdown because he must justify the decisions he has made and that is also why he is on a campaign to pump up some of these freshman. Yes, Champion had 10 tackles last game, so what. Where was he making them 10 - 20 yards downfield. Was he out of position on some of those completed passes, who knows? I do not except the young team argument because Reno is choosing to not play more experience people who have been productive in real games.

Reno has made several decisions that if Coach Williams had made them the call for his head would have been unamious. Down by six points and not punting inside of your own 35 yard line with 10 minutes left in the Cornell game really? When he has chosen to attempt field goals versus when he has gone for it on fourth down, really? Do not use the kicking woes as an excuse, if Coach Williams could not use that excuse, neither can Reno, it's the same kicker.

Reno may be a promising coach, but because of his arrogance he took the position that nothing done prior to him showing up was right and that he had all the answers. As I stated previously I think he now realizes that Coach Williams was not as dumb as he thought he was, and he is not has brillant as he assumed he was. The problem is it took sacrificing this season to get this far and I am still not sure he gets it.

If he is not careful, his arrogance will eventually lead to his undoing.

What's missing with this team?...the intangibles...how many teams, at any level, have you seen that may not have the star(s)...but because they are a team that respects one another and feels respected by the coaching staff...they prevail...they succeed...they have that extra something that WINS games...That's what missing with this team. Too many players feel disrespected and are not "all in."

Agreed. Players have to respect the coaches in order for them to give it their all and coaches have to respect the players in order to make them a team. I think Reno has been showing his freshman players more love than the majority of guys that are upper class men and those are the guys that can lead a team. Makes no sense at all. The Question is when will somebody, anybody do something about it?

You guys are brutal...second guessing the coaches every move. You all must have the necessary skills, knowledge and credentials to be colleges coaches.

Well apparently credentials aren't that important

I don't see anything "brutal" about it. If you choose a career as a football coach, especially in a fairly high profile job, your work will be closely scrutinized and criticized; it's just part of it. And if your team is underperforming - and if this team wins one or two games ths year, that is SEVERE underperformance, you deserve and will get criticism. I think most of the commentary here is actually pretty fair - insightful, thoughtful and well informed. And I just re-watched the Cornell game and saw an incredibly underprepared team. One simple example is three different procedure calls for five men in the backfield. Don't these guys practive every day? That's a formation, for God's sake. If that is not a coaching/preparation mistake, what is? And one last thought - I don't think you need to be concerned about people being "brutal" to Coach Reno - he clearly doesn't care what anyone thinks anyway - and that attitude will produce a winner in the long run - or another ex-Yale coach
