Yale expected to add McGowan, Stevens to coaching staff

Yale is expected to name Sean McGowan as its new defensive coordinator and Jordan Stevens as its new defensive line coach, a source said.

McGowan, a Cheshire native, served two seasons at Boston College as the program’s special teams coordinator and SAM linebackers coach. Prior to that, he most recently coached at Temple and New Hampshire.

Stevens comes over after serving as Maine’s defensive line coach.

The expected hirings come after the resignations of defensive coordinator Rick Flanders and defensive line coach Carlton Hall.

The Bulldogs, who finished third in the Ivy League last season, allowed 29.9 points per game (fifth in the Ivy) and 410.8 yards per game (fourth in the Ivy).

I would agree as long as Reno is coaching the defense will be bad. A few transfers and a player would should have been suspended lead to an 8-2 year. It will all come back.

Defense showed what it was capable of the first half of the Harvard Game. The talent is there, just need the right guys to nurture it.

It seems like fumbles, dropped passes and penalties actually bailed out the defense in the first half.

Will Reno let McGowan have an input on the defensive scheme? Reno is scared of his own shadow and ultra conservative. McGowan was at BC the last two years and they were ultra aggressive.

Reno scared of his own shadow just another stupid remark. Flanders was the conservative one bend but do not break mentality.

Just because BC was aggressive doesn't mean he will be. He didn't call any plays for BC he was just on the staff. Will spring practices be open to the public?

Yale Follower:

Yale's secondary was still very young last year. They played five guys who consisted of a junior and four sophomores. This will be a year to really gauge the defense as a whole. Both sides of the ball have improved each year. Offense just improved more drastically. Most people do not realize how bare the cupboard was left when reno got there. This staff has made Yale contenders again. Too many harsh words by anonymous posters. I wish Yale the best of luck!

Due to Ciotti's age look to see him in a role but not as a position coach. Larry is an unbelievable asset to the program. Reno is a good person but due to has lack of public sharing for information about the program, he has been unrightfully judged by people who do not know him and are not part of the program. Let the man coach. If they are consistently below .500, then he should go. The record in years 3-5 are the best gauge of him as a coach. Until then Go Elis!

Also look to see Abu Daremy do a pg year at Choate before entering yale. He will be the best player in the NEPSAC by far.

Yale secondary is slow recievers ran by them all year especially last pass at Harvard. Adjustments in defense have to be made in order to make up for lack of speed. Otherwise I agree one more year of experience should help.

Yale cannot be good on defense because of it's style of offense. Uptempo offense means the defense will be on the field a lot, never be rested and more will go wrong.

Yale ran 150 more plays then H this season. That's what I'll call uptempo! Conlin has them playing fast.

The defense need not be on the field long if they can cause some three-and-outs! That seems to be more of a problem than the offense.

They got a good shot at the buzzer which didn't fall, probably a much better scoring opportunity than if they called timeout. This was always Bob Knight's way, have the players prepared and don't call timeout because it gives the defense a chance to get set. The layup just didn't fall and the tip was no good, I don't think you lay that on the coach.

Yale Follower:

McGowan was fired from BC. His replacement at BC was hired well before McGowan was hired at Yale. Still a good coach but did not choose to come to Yale over staying at BC, and it's Vashel not Vassel. The fact you don't know his name proves you can't give an appropriate opinion on his defensive coaching ability. Vashel has coached quality Db's at Maine including an NFL draft pick. The secondary has been young and this year will be a good year to judge his ability at Yale.

Excited to see what will go on during spring ball! Go Elis!
