Yale spring football is underway

The Bulldogs opened their spring session this week. It will finish up with the annual Blue-White scrimmage on April 19 at 2:30 p.m. at the Yale Bowl.

Morgan Roberts looks poised to take over at quarterback. Also, Tony Reno made it official on Friday that Joe Conlin has been promoted to offensive coordinator.

Reno has been pleased with the Bulldogs improvement in the gym.

“The guys have made marginal gains in the weight room to get stronger and that was a major area of concern going into the offseason,” Reno said. “Really good gains from a lot of guys. There is still a ways to go to get stronger.”

Some players of note that will be held out of the spring session for precautionary reasons: RB Tyler Varga, RB Candler Rich, WR Robert Clemons, OL Ben Carberry and DL Ben Bedard.

Roberts expects WR Grant Wallace to emerge this season. Wallace had 31 receptions for 421 yards and two TDs last year.

“This is Grant Wallace’s year to really shine,” Wallace said. “I think he had Chris in front of him a little bit last year. I don’t think that necessarily affected his play, but maybe his opportunities on the field. This year he’s going to be a deep threat and surprise everyone and be one of the best players in the Ivy League. I love watching him play and I think this year is going to be standout year for him.”

I will drop by practice again later next week.

Chris:
Are the five players you mention missing the entire spring session or just the contact portion? In other words, what is their status? Thanks.

Chris; Why did you say Roberts looked poise to take over at QB and are the players being held out because recovering from injury or surgery.

Yes, they will miss contact portion. Varga because of his foot injury. The rest had minor surgeries following season.
As for Roberts, I feel with his talent and a year learning the offense, he will be the starter. That is just my opinion though.

Chris:
Can Varga run hard and cut at this time?

To be honest, I'm not sure about Varga. I will have a better idea next week.
And I will go Thursday next week. Since they leave for Gettysburg on Friday, Friday's practice is supposed to be moved to Thursday.

Presumably this trip to a graveyard is seen as a bonding experience to prepare the team for the upcoming season?

Hi Chris Ray Stan Paul and Jon Harris How are you? Well here we go again another year of yale football. i hope all of us have less hair loss. Chris and ray you did a great job with the new recruits coming in. Jon harris you know how to work a room. i dont know if people love ya or hate you. very good news with joe being made offensive coach good choice. now i hope he will open up the offense. we have so much talent on this team lets start using it. it would be nice if he gets away from the spread offense and goes in another direction. we have a good line returning good backs and some good wide recievers. we have the backs to run the powerI the pro set and possibly wildcat. Just have to find some good full backs and tight ends that can block. Any fresh. soph. jr. can run these formations. we have a good full back coming in nick crowle 6-3 245. i know he is a LB but give him a shot. also Jackson Stallings 6-2 225 i know he did not play alot last year. but give him a shot also. he may suprise us. Plase givie our running back some blocking at the pointof attack. we have the potential to have one ofthe best in the league. Defense is a work in progress. one last thought i hope he keeps Friedline at center and not move him to the end. see you guys soon, Walt Yale Blue

Chris:
Anything you can discover about Ben Bedard would be of interest. He didn't play last year so he couldn't have been banged up during the season. As you know, we need DL help badly. Thanks.

Bedard had surgery on his shoulders.
It would be nice if the Yale football office would provide an updated spring roster. I called the office this A.M. But I got no satisfaction re a roster.

Hi Chris ,Ray and Walt It would be nice to have a updated roster and a Roster at the spring game that is a completed format. height and weights along with accurate jersey # 's
The fridge Friedline I think is a very important cog for the O line this year.He is going to be a very special player for the next few years. Cheers Jon Harris

Chris; Will the offense be running new schemes this spring? Also who does coach Reno expect will step up and contribute this year.

Someone asked awhile ago if there was going to be any position changes. I have not heard any respone so can we assume there is none and in the case of Friedline he will remain at center. Is Avery Lewis going to play in the spring.

I have not yet received a copy of the updated roster. When I do, I will post.
As for schemes, I was told not much will change.
As far as those who will "step up?" Some names I've heard are Morgan Roberts, Grant Wallace, Mason Friedline, Khalid Cannon, Mike Bernandez and Keith Hawk.
Longinotti is at center.
I'm not sure about Lewis. I will check Friday when I go to practice.

Many thanks for prodding the football office which I assume is overworked and under-staffed. That office either needs more people or needs people who enjoy communicating and can keep their eye on the ball. Take the football website for instance--Quick Facts still talks about 2013 and, when you go to the roster you'll see there are discrepancies between the text describing what X did in 2013 and the newly-added boxes which theoretically summarize the same info. Also, it is common to see a player's dimensions shown differently in different places. It just doesn't make sense for an operation so dependent on contributions and good will to be close-lipped, stale and inaccurate. That said, I remain a huge fan of the team and the coaching staff.

Guys just a throught I was surprised that they moved mason friedline from center. I was hopeing that he would be our center for the next 3 years. Left tackle would be great for him takeing care of the qb blind side.Longinotti should be a good center.Chris can you find out if remick kawawaki will play this year could be a good player. thanks chris walt yale blue.

Longinotti is best suited for center with Friedline at guard since he is more athletic. Interesting part will be if Carbery plays guard or tackle, probably depend on the big fresh,an OT coming in. DL will be much improved as I've heard Egu is 245 and Tyler is 300 plus! This team has a chance to surprise especially if Varga is healthy.

Overall pretty good news on most fronts... if only the quarterback situation pans out, we might have a decent season.

As always with us, until Coach Reno completes improving the breed, injuries will be the key. We now have quite a few players who are, or soon will be, very good. However, the drop-off between starters and substitutes remains extreme.

Wasn't most of the OLine seniors last year? Who is returning? Who are primed to start and who are the back ups? I remember readying about a set of twins from Ohio I think. Be kind of cool to have brothers playing next to each other, being a twin myself. :-)

The online is essential to a formidable offense. Hope they have the talent they had in the past couple years.
