Yale-Brown scrimmage and other news
Despite a sluggish start, Yale knocked off Brown 30-24 in Saturday's scrimmage at Providence.
A handful of starters were held out for the Bulldogs for
precautionary reasons. Morgan Roberts played a few series and that was it.
Candler Rich, Stephen Buric, Robert Clemons and Foye Oluokun did not play.
Chris Williams-Lopez caught a TD, Spencer Rymiszewski and Jason Alessi both had
INTs, which were some of the highlights.
“I was happy with the effort, but the execution isn’t where
it needs to be,” Tony Reno said. “We have another week. We have to get better
in a week.”
Reno said Brown looked strong.
Roberts said Yale came out flat. He was encouraged by the
underclassmen’s ability to grasp the base offense and noted Rafe Chapple had a
strong outing under center.
Deshawn Salter, Jamal Locke and Austin Reuland all saw time
in the backfield in Rich’s absence.
On the defensive side, Alessi played both CB and safety.
“We have a long way to go still,” Cole Champion said. “Even
more so than I thought.”
Yale has expanded its defensive schemes.
“We’ve been able to do a little more than in the past,” Reno
said. “We’re good in base, but we have multiplicity now because guys can handle
it.”
Bo Hines was held out of practice on Tuesday as a precaution.
Chris Williams-Lopez appeared to suffer a head/neck injury late in practice and
left in an ambulance (UPDATE: Williams-Lopez was taken to the hospital as a precaution and is expected to make a full recovery, Reno said).
Reno did say all starters are expected to play in the opener
against Colgate.

Chris can we get a off and def depth chart for the first game? Also from what people are saying we have no run game no Varga. Why not start running some plays with a fullback these kids can not do it alone. I would like to see Chris Maxwell at running back tough kid tight end is not his position . Also lets get the tight ends more involved in the passing game and blocking these kids are good players.
Im with walt on this one we have the players for the two tight end formations lets have some fun give the defense something to think about.
Scrapping the offense to put in a fullback a week before the season doesn't seem like the best idea. Also I'm pretty sure we do not want Maxwell at RB, don't know where that idea is coming from Walt. Good kid, but doesn't need to be running the ball. Run game will be fine, Rich has always been a playmaker and Salter has talent. Run game is really more dependent on O-line these days anyway.
I agree with 8:58AM. We have a system that has been successful for us since Reno has been here. There is no need to scrap it now that one of the best RB’s in school history is gone. Things happen, kids graduate, and we are going to have to deal with that. Again people, we CAN NOT expect things to be as productive for us in the run game as they were last year with an NFL RB in our backfield. It is idiotic to expect the same level of production.
I also agree that things are going not have to rest on our OL to start here. They had much more to do with Varga’s success last year than people think, although he was great. They will need to have an even bigger impact this year for us to be successful than they did last year (which was substantial). I also agree that Rich will be fine and Salter has some talent too. I also think that we will have a 3rd back to involve in a rotation possibly in either Locke or Reuland once they are more accustom to the offense at RB, they were both position switches as of last spring, and Locke never got any reps in the spring (due to injury), so this is his first time in the offense at all. They are both still getting comfortable as opposed Rich and Salter who have been there. Once they get there they should assist the production as well. I think the running game will come around, how soon is the question. Need our OL to shoulder the load until it does. As great as Varga was, he could not have been as successful as he was without an OL that did its job too.
Rich is good enough to go .500 this upcoming season. He's extremely average at best. I would love for some of these young O Lineman to push Friedline out of the starting lineup. His time is up, enough of him getting throttled into the backfield every play. He gives no effort in practice and cant perform in the game.
2:34PM that seems like it is insider info, love it. I agree that there are some impressive young offensive lineman. I also agree that I would like to stop seeing Friedline getting plowed into the backfield, which is not going to help us at all.
I partially agree with you about Rich. If all of our hopes of success hinged on him that I would say you are correct in saying that we could go .500 with him. However we have more to offer than that. Our receivers (although not necessarily Randall and Wallace) will be more productive than many think this year. In addition having an accomplished QB will also help us out. His experience and production are going to have to help carry us as well until we can get things into place for the running game to help us. That can make for us definitely finishing over.500. We will have to see how the schedule plays out. As we begin to roll guys may gain confidence and in turn their play will increase. 10 days till we start to find out, looking forward to it.
What's all this .500 talk? The goal and expectation is to win an Ivy League Championship. Nothing less. Furthermore, Rich is a good running back. You don't need to take my word for it. Just look at his stats for the last two years. I know he's not Tyler Varga, but football is the ultimate team sport. Yale has the horses to get the job done. Go Bulldogs!
If Varga never came to Yale, Reno is not coaching this years team. Sad but true. It's so rare to have a skill player make an NFL roster from the Ivy League. He was a rare player for the Ivy League.
9:05PM You are a genius! Give it a rest and leave Reno alone. However I will l agree that is a rarity to see a skill player make it to the NFL from the Ivy’s. When is the last RB that made an NFL roster from Yale? Some time, so don’t expect the current guys competing for time to fill those shoes that way this year.
You people are boring. Each year comes a new challenge. Different set of situations, but what you fail to see is the grade of player coming to Yale. That student athlete that can compete at a SEC or Pac12 etc.program. This is the player that is coming to Yale now,I have not seen this caliper of athlete since the 70's. So keep on stating how theplayers are this or Reno is that.Because you have not the vision to see past your noses. On what truly is happening. sincerely Jon Harris Go Yale !!!!
ATTA BOY JONNY!!!!
GO YALE!!!
I wonder if 9:05 remembers that it was Reno who recruited Varga!
Yale has no players that could compete at the SEC or PAC 12 level. Maybe they could be third string but wouldn't get on the field. Roberts was the 5th string QB at Clemson. Yes he was on the team but he would have never played.
To 10:13am you sound pathetic,Your statement Yale has no one that could compete. Well your mistaken. In your haste you forgot that Yale does in fact have a player, his name is BO HINES. He not only started for NC Wolfpack but he led his team in receptions yardage etc.. So you are a little person with and agenda. Are you a Harvard wanna be or maybe the same person that hasn't accepted the fact That Yale is back and your pants got pulled down little man. GO YALE and you, just go away. sincerely Jon Harris
NC State is in the ACC. Not the SEC or PAC 12.
Chris:
Can you let us know which of the football games can be viewed on the ILDN? Many of the games are being televised on stations that most of us can't access.

Colgate and Lehigh are on Patriot League Network. PatriotLeague.TV
FSU is in the ACC, and so is Clemson. ACC football and Pac 12 football can basically interchange with conference strength top to bottom on a yearly basis, so stop thinking you are Mel Kiper or Todd McShay 10:59AM & 10:13AM. You are just a Reno hater disguised. I'll bet a pay check that if we looked at posts from a year ago you were saying the same thing about Varga not being able to compete in any of those conferences, but he is now on a 53 man roster at the highest level of football in the world. You know absolutely nothing.
The Yale roster has people that received full scholarship offers from PAC 12 teams. Roberts was a 5th string kid as a freshman and a redshirt freshman, so of course that argument sucks too. Furthermore being successful on the football field in those places takes much more than you think. Just because our kids are "smart" and not as "big" or "athletic" does not mean that they could not compete in these conferences. You wouldn’t know that though because you are a moron. Stop drawing for straws and identify yourself as a Harvard grad reading this blog with his morning Joe, because that is your level of knowledge on the subject. What a joke.
10:59 You are a funny little man, I knew you would use that as a rebuttle. ACC is in fact a power 5 conference member your a tool Go Away little boy,Just go away. Go Yale
Yours truly Jon Harris
On a more relevant note. The defensive backs have been singled out as an experienced group that have played a lot of snaps together over the past few years. My question is the linebacker group. Does anyone have a feel for the strength of this group and which players to include freshman are playing well?
I am glad the D backs are bigger, stronger and more experienced this year, but they were clearly the weakest element of the team last year, accounting for lots of big plays and TDs by the opposition. Maybe Yale could use some new blood here as well as among the D line and linebackers.
Friedline isn't cracking the 3 deep for any PAC 12 teams despite the offers he had.
1:02 What kind of classless jerk are you. You gonna single out a kid really.? What have you done in your life.? Except disparage people on a blog. One word (Loser) You should be ashamed of yourself. But you don't even understand what your doing.I feel sorry for your family.
1:02PM definitely has an ax to grind with Friedline. I agree, that is poor. I’m sure he is the same guy who posted at 2:34PM as well, also done in poor taste.
To address the D-back comment. They definitely struggled last year. However being hopeful, they should be much improved this year (as it seems as per the coaches). I am not sure if the “new blood” on the roster is better (right now) than the guys we have there with experience. Guys like Harris, Champion, Rymiszewski, and Oluokun have been playing for a good amount of time and I believe they will have their best years yet. However, if things do not improve it may be time to think about giving an opportunity to guys like Bryan, Allesi (who made starts last year but now because of numbers and players returning looks like the odd man out) and maybe the freshman Pegg.
And as for the linebackers and D-Line and the “new blood” needed there it seems like the person making that comment doesn’t know much about our team. Oplinger is one of our best defenders and had a great freshman year (honorable mention All-Ivy I believe). Egu is in at the middle LB spot which is probably where he will prosper the most as he played there some in HS. He has been playing all over the place for us to get him on the field as he has intangibles that the coaches do not want on the sideline. Yet moving to the inside may prove to be the best place for him now that we have guys who can fill holes in other places. Larkin also got a good amount of reps prior to his injury and is in the hunt for time there as well, in addition to Manora. On the d-line with Crowle, Tyler, Moesta, and others that is a solid area for us. You clearly are not up on our Bulldogs and their production. The D should be a strength for us early with guys who have played before with a good amount of production. Of course they need to get on the same page but that should happen fairly soon as well.
Point of clarification. The inside linebacker lines up in the gaps over center and is referred to as Mike responsible for calling the defense. Egu and Opplinger will play either weak or strong side linebackers. Don't know the health of Larkin, but he and Manora will battle for the MLB job to compliment the other two. Should be a solid athletic group with good speed.
Believe it or not every power 5 team has kids on the roster that are terrible. Recruiting sites are a complete scam littered with bribes from parents and coaches. Even the mighty Alabama makes huge mistakes in recruiting.
8:21pm Who cares?Roll Tide,Harvard sucks and so do you.!!
Are games on the Patriot Network free?
Yes
Chris when will the depth chart be out any word?
The depth chart is usually released early in the week of the game.
