Yale preseason update

Here’s some news from preseason camp…

QB Morgan Roberts says the offense has a lot to work on.

“We have a ton of potential,” he said. “Grant Wallace, Will Chism, Tyler Varga, Deon Randall and everyone we lost, thing that made them great is that they focused on the details. All those little details added up and we became a really good offense. That’s just something we’re trying to preach right now. We need to focus on the details and we’ll be fine.”

Tony Reno said the issue right now is timing on offense. The effort is there, it’s just a matter of timing and technique. A banged up OL doesn’t help. But there are a lot of new faces on offense, so perhaps it’s just a matter of getting on the same page.

As for the defense, Roberts was impressed.

“They’re working really hard,” he said. “There are new coverages and a lot of different things, which is hard for me to keep up with and identifying coverages. It’s pretty impressive.”

Reno said they are playing fast and getting to the football. For what it’s worth, the defense leads the offense 5-4 in team competition.

NC State transfer Bo Hines is showing glimpses of his big-play capability. He scored an 80-yd TD on a flat route in practice on Sunday. He’s still learning the offense, but his speed and playmaking ability has been impressive.

Freshman QB Tre Moore has quickly shown why he was such a highly touted recruit. Reno has been impressed with his intangibles, leadership skills and demeanor in the pocket.

“He’s done a great job,” Roberts said. “What’s impressed me most, even when he doesn’t know a play he makes a play out of it.”

Reno wouldn’t say who’s the No. 2 QB right now, but Moore was certainly getting a lot of reps behind Roberts and may have pulled ahead of Rafe Chapple.

Some other players that have stood out early on: OL Jon Bezney, WR Chris Williams-Lopez, OL Jake Rushin (moved from DT), Robert Clemons’ leadership, DT Nick Crowle, LB Andrew Larkin, DE Victor Egu and LB Duncan Morfitt (missed last season). Reno also added the secondary has made real strides as a unit.

Lastly, Spencer McManes will no longer play football because of a back injury. McManes, a junior, had moved from QB to LB. He will still help out with the team.

It will be interesting to see who plays Saturday against Brown and equally interesting to see who is held out of the scrimmage.

Last year Yale beat Brown pretty easily in the scrimmage, with several key players held out(including Varga, I believe). It was a good test for the team's depth.

It would be great to see Chapple and Moore play most of the game. That would help a lot in picking the No. 2 QB.

anyone could have called the plays last year for Yale. A chimpanzee could have been the OC with Varga on the team. Let's see how these offensive genius do now.

Excited for season to start. I have faith in the team.

On the contrary 8:52, the offensive brain trust made great use of admittedly great assets. They mixed things up, kept everyone healthy, and prevented the opposition from focusing on any one aspect of out attack.

This weekend’s scrimmage vs. Brown will be very telling for the Bulldogs. It will be good to have C. Hunn on the coverage again to get his recount as well. As last year we should all assume that any definite starters who are banged up at all or not fully healthy will see limited reps if any. This is common practice in scrimmages and was what was done last year as it was mentioned in an earlier post.

That said I am assuming we also should see both Rafe Chapple and Tre Moore get a good amount of reps at the QB position to find out who will be Robert’s back-up. I am figuring that Logan Scott basically went from a 2 on the depth chart last year to a 3 (or maybe a 4 if Moore is as good as Reno says) this year. If that is not already the case then we can expect him to get some reps to prove his worth as well.

I was not able to see the scrimmage last weekend but was told and read that the OL is somewhat banged up so I’m sure not all of the starters there will play, which will be good to measure our depth but interesting to see the production of the run game. Again the pressing question will be the RB position and how the reps are allocated there.

As of now I believe it is clear that Candler Rich is the unquestioned started and Deshawn Salter is the #2. I wonder if that is a competition as well or has their position on the depth chart already been decided. We do know that neither of them participated in the end of the spring practices. None the less I will be curious to see how many reps are given to the two of them. Seeing their production against another team and some first teamers from there will be interesting. The next question is who will be the next in at that point assuming that we will have 3 backs that will get carries (which was the case last year with the carries rightfully being dominated by Varga). Austin Reuland, Andrew Johnson, and Jamal Locke all got reps there in the scrimmage (in that order as I was told). I wonder if there was any movement there. Also if either of the top 2 guys is held out or are on limited reps that should allow all of them to get enough reps so that a solid 3 can be crowned. Remains to be seen.

No one should be alarmed at the offense not “clicking” yet; this is common for football teams early. In addition having to adjust to new members of an offense with timing and other factors this is common place in the first scrimmage of the year. The defense looking solid is a comforting fact. It will be nice to see them battle against another team as well. Looking forward to it and the report from it!
