Lett expected to be named new Yale RB coach
Yale is expected to name Derrick Lett its new RB coach, a source confirmed.
Lett comes from the University of Tennessee where he served as offensive quality control assistant for two seasons.
He spent four seasons as the passing game coordinator at Bowling Green High (Ohio) prior to that. Lett played WR at Bowling Green State from 2001-05.
Lett replaces Larry Ciotti, who stepped down as Bulldogs RB coach after 21 seasons. Ciotti still remains very involved with the program.

What the hell is a quality control assistant seems like bandaid hire of an important position especially this year.
BGS plays Tennessee first game of the season. Just a tidbit hire does not make sense.
Congratulations and thank you to Coach Ciotti on a great career coaching our RBs. What a stable of RBs he has had the opportunity to coach. And to go out on top (with Varga) is pretty special.

Ciotti is a loss. Yet if you know coaching you understand that he had 21 year’s experience, the end was near. Congrats to him with his future.
It looks as though the immediate future is mentorship though. I see him taking Lett under his wing and helping him as a coach and to navigate through the Yale program.
Will be curious to see how the hire pans out. No need to down it immediately, need to give him a shot. He is young, which will make some have negative things to say of course. However this is not a lease for failure. And you also can not judge the guy by the offensive quality control assistant. This is an entry level position in coaching and many successful coaches manned these positions in the beginning of their careers taking a spot on a staff to get in the business. In addition these guys do a lot of film work, which is great for any coach to do.
Also can’t cut the guy’s head off based on how he does this year. He is inheriting a position group that has just loss one of the best players in program history and that is filling a very large void on the team. It will definitely be interesting to see how he meshes with that group and what he can get out of them though. Given those things how good he is remains to be seen.

TNC does a good job sugar coating a potentially disastrous situation the fact was Reno had 4-5 months to find a coach at this position and ended up with a prize in the Cracker Jack box. It begs the question with all the running back coaches out there who are looking to move up why none were recruited for hire. Reno gets a D- on this one.
I would say 10:43 gets a D--. I wonder if 10:43 is a more secretive Truth Teller. We haven't heard from him in a while.
Larry Ciotti and Carm Cozza represent the soul of Yale football. Larry isn't going anywhere. He's getting a well deserved rest, and you can bet he will mentor Lett just as he has been mentoring Tony Reno. Looks to me like a perfect transition.
For the record, I am not related by blood or marriage to anyone on the Yale staff.
What does mentoring entail regarding coaching running backs if the esteemed coach Ciotti needs rest how effective can he be during the mentoring process. 2:18 apparently thinks hiring a rookie coach who has never played the position is a good thing.
2:18 thinks 4:06 is unimaginative and perhaps not great with people, probably wouldn't make a great coach.
Let the guy blow his whistle at practics .Before getting your panties in bunch.Eneryone has to start some where Lett is going to be fine.

Jon we have no control over the situation I was just voicing my opinion of a preference to have had a more experienced coach at the running back position. I sincerely hope Lett turns out to be another Lombardi.
Conlin thinks he the next coming of Bill Walsh and will most likely bully the kid, crack jokes about Tennessee to justify his inability to get to FBS status. Other then that, the kid will be fine. Coaching running backs is very easy and doesn't require a ton of past experience.
No problem just adding a little common sense to the situation.Let the guy get in the job first.
Sometimes it's better to have a younger coach so you can teach him your philosphy an methods.
Bill Belichick started in a similar position with the Baltimore Colts, before moving up to the illustrious position of Assistant Special Teams coach with the Lions. His career seems to have turned out okay.
Those crapping on this hire would surely complain if they were hung with a new rope. Disgruntled people with an ax to grind, no doubt.
Rch Pont was one of the most successful back coaches at Yale (Calvin Hill, Brian Dowling Kenny Hill) or anywhere, and he was inexperienced when he started at Yale under his brother,John Pont.

More than a little irony that the commenters on this site lauded Chandler Henry's hiring, coming off three years as a graduate assistant in the SEC, and now are crapping all over the hiring of Lett because he was a quality control assistant in the SEC.
Unless you were conducting the interviews, you know nothing about this guy or his abilities, or of the other candidates.
Why would Hatch suddenly just get out of coaching? Reno run him out of the program?
Ciotti didn't revolutionize the RB position fellas. He was given a gift in Tyler Varga that he rode right into retirement. The new guy should do just fine.
Get over yourself 7:25PM. I know someone who played with Hatch in college, always wanted to be an AD and had the opportunity at Stony Brook. Get off the Reno hating bandwagon, or at least make a valid point to work him over the coals for.

The less educated posters on this blog love to crucify people immediately before giving them an appropriate opportunity, looking at all the facts, and/or taking all factors into account. You would assume this would be different given the “highly educated” connection to the university. Guess I am giving most more credit that deserved.
If he wanted to be an AD, why didn't he go into the athletic department instead of coaching football. Sounds like Reno wore him out. That's a shame when you lose young coaches.
Coaches don’t wear other coaches out. Coaching life wears coaches out. Maybe he could not take it, or realized he wanted no part of that arduous life. It’s a lot different and easier to sit in the AD’s office then it is to coach. Iif he wanted to be a coach so bad why did he leave to become an associate AD and sit behind a desk all day? He could have got on a staff anywhere on the field level if he really wanted it. Reno can’t be the blame for everything. How about sticking to blaming him for the wins and losses.

Looks like our people may have things wrong. It is on PENN’s schedule as a Saturday game scheduled for 10/24. I didn’t think Franklin Field had lights.
What is up with our sports info people anyway? I don’t want to sound like any of the naysayers but I am curious who things don’t get updated more quickly. Chris does a better job with things than the people on staff. I’d love to see another player Q&A. And the www.insideyalefootball.com has not been updated in some places in 2 years. There is one new video on there but again it would be nice to see things current and keep those of us looking for constant Yale football news satiated.
8:45 couldn't answer WHY Yale only has 4home games this year.. he could only be obnoxious. I never miss a home game, and having just 4 games at The Bowl this year is disappointing.
The Yale football parents have been told that the Penn game will indeed be played on Friday night and the hotel information has been sent out reflecting that........

Guys just a quick thought. Last year after recruiting I put on the blogger. Coach Reno take a look at Jamal Locke at running back . Put 10lb on him and you have an all ivy running back his jr. year. It would be great if this happen. Well i have another one Chris Maxwell good size and speed and loves to hit also a great blocker. Get him started early if he wants to be arunning back. He could help at hback to. Just my thought. Hope to see you guys soon ray mr.harris have a good summer . Ray any news from the football camps ? Mr harris hows the fishing? walt yale blue.

Put the names up What players What do you think harvard does in all sports . Why not just give free rides to all players in all sports Then everyone will be the same no fighting on recruiting. John; The ride to Orono is a mere five and half hours. I agree home schedule is not good and distance in four straight away games is grueling. I would think Reno has some say in the scheduling.
