More Yale spring notes
Here are some notes from spring practice this week…
The defense has looked pretty good early on. Players like Dale Harris and Foye Oluokun have stood out. Also, players and coaches have really spoke highly about Victor Egu and the improvements he’s made coming into the spring.
Right now, Matt Oplinger, Jaeden Graham and Brian Sykes are competing at the SAM. Inside, it’s Egu, Darius Manora, Andrew Larkin and Keefer Johnson, who has moved from outside to inside.
OL Cody Arledge has been looking solid early on as well. Last year, Arledge played JV.
“They’re all working hard,” said QB Morgan Roberts about OLs Anders Huizenga, Jon Bezney and Arledge. “They’re young, trying to work on technique. The athleticism with those guys is there. We’ve recruited the talent, it’s just a matter of understanding and applying it on the field.”
As for the offense as a whole, Roberts added this: “A lot of WRs are working their tails off. The conditions haven’t been ideal. I don’t think our offense has played that well. We’re trying to figure some things out and get our timing down with some people gone. But I think the product in the fall will be just as good if not better than it was last year.”
With Deon Randall and Grant Wallace gone, Robert Clemons is the WR with the most experience. He looks to be in great shape and is taking on that leadership role. Clemons had 26 receptions for 282 yards and three touchdowns last season.
RB Candler Rich has also looked good early on. He’s definitely much bigger and joked, saying “I got on Varga’s supplement and nutrition plan, which has helped a lot.” Rich has put on 10 lbs since last season.
Deshawn Salter and John Barton will be in the mix at RB.
As for Pro Days, it appears that Charles Cook had an impressive performance and has a shot to get invited to a camp.

Am I the only one who thinks the cupboard is really bare at running back? I like Candler Rich; I think he's a nice solid (if not spectacular) player, and Salter showed a few flashes I guess, but what is after that? What if we have any injuries at that spot? I don't really see too much there on the recruits list either. Can anyone reassure me that I'm wrong about this?
THE TEAM HAD A SCRIMMAGE THIS A.M. MYLES GAINES DISPLAYED BREAK AWAY SPEED ON A TOUCHDOWN PASS. JASON ALESSI, HAYDEN CARLSON, AND WILL BRYAN PLAYED WELL AS DBS. BLAKE HORN SHOWED A STRONG LEG ON FGS. BRYAN HOLMES WAS PUNTING THE BALL HIGH AND LONG.
Amazing that Alessi is playing football and lacrosse simultaneously.
Looking forward to the 2nd week of August.
Cheers Jon Harris
