Yale defensive coordinator Rick Flanders has resigned, a source confirmed on Thursday.
The Bulldogs, who finished third in the Ivy League last season, allowed 29.9 points per game (fifth in the Ivy) and 410.8 yards per game (fourth in the Ivy).
Flanders finished his 18th season at Yale last year. He has also handled defensive backs and linebackers duties during his tenure. While serving as a defensive assistant, Yale ranked No. 1 in FCS scoring defense in 2007 and 2008.
Neither Flanders or Yale head coach Tony Reno could be reached for comment.
Yale is also looking to replace defensive line coach Carlton Hall, who resigned following last season. Hall spent just one season with the Bulldogs. He came over from Elon, where he coached the defensive line.
Yale will begin its spring session the week of March 22.
Yale Follower:
ReplyDeleteFlanders will join Columbia staff as the DC. Al Bagnoli will be named Columbia's head coach in the upcoming days.
This is a shame, but congrats to him on an incredible career at Yale. 18 years is no small accomplishment, especially when you consider the number of head coaches he worked under (and got jerked around by).
ReplyDeleteWill always have respect for him for his ability to swallow his pride in the face of the terrible injustice he was subjected to during the Williams regime. Malloe had never had a coordinator position in his career, and they demoted the DC of a defense that had been ranked #1 two years in a row to make room for him.
If he and Bagnoli team up at Columbia, I will instantly have a second favorite team in the Ivy League. Two old school class acts.
12:14 Is right on.
ReplyDeleteWhy on earth would Al Bagnoli leave Penn for Columbia?
ReplyDeleteWhy would Reno not be available for comment? He is in the dead period coaching IVY league football. What could be possibly be doing?
ReplyDeleteReno is a coward.
ReplyDelete3:40 your a moron,who knows nothing.
ReplyDeleteChris; Do you know the reason Flanders resigned? Are their any potential replacements for OC and defensive line coaches.
ReplyDeleteFlanders leaves after 18 years and goes to Columbia there has to be a scoop somewhere.
ReplyDelete18 years is a long time to be at one place.A change of scenery maybe helpful, for both sides.
ReplyDeleteAll the best to Coach Flanders
and to the Yale football team in it's search for a DL coach and DC.

ReplyDeleteReno available for comment yet?
ReplyDeleteFlanders left because of Reno. It is that simple. They had problems from day one. This is not some "I've been here 18 years and need a change" decision. In fact, it was likely leave or be fired. I'll be called a Reno basher and a troll but whatever, it's true. As for Reno not commenting, to me that seems in keeping with his style. His coaching record, showing improvement each year, can't really be questioned even by people who are bashers. His people skills and his diplomacy are another thing entirely. I know there are those of us (not very vocal on this blog but most definitely out there) who respect the improvement in record but question whether Coach Reno's scorched earth methods of dealing with people can work long term.
ReplyDeleteFlanders was told in December he was going to be demoted but could stay on the staff when Bagnoli asked him to be DC then he resigned.
ReplyDeleteI like coach Flanders but lets face it the defense was not in step with the times and pure vanilla.
ReplyDeleteAll the best to Flanders after 18 years of contribution, loyalty and much bull....t. The circumstances of his departure can be speculated, but anyone who knows anything should conclude he was forced out and then fortunately latched on to an opportunity at Columbia...the guy wants to work and coach!
ReplyDeleteAs for Reno, a tough guy to figure out. Socially immature and awkward as acknowledged by players and team parents. A guy that has succeeded in his tenure, but a long way way from a rounded leader, proficient at all facets of being a head coach and what that entails. If I was the AD I'd spend money getting him a life coach so that he can be much better sooner versus later. He clearly wants to win and succeed and I would not bet against him....but he has got to mature sooner versus later. His lack of comment on Flanders tenure and contribution is classic data point on his youth and social immaturity.
anyone know what happen to tyler varga at the NFL work outs ? A no show when the fullbacks were to work out.
ReplyDeleteVarga injured his foot Friday and could not participate today. He will have a Pro Day at Yale though. 7:04, your assessment of Reno is spot on
ReplyDeleteVarga failed the NFL test for PED's.
ReplyDelete@ 1:07AM: Link?
ReplyDeleteOtherwise, I call worthless, anonymous troll.
That wouldn't shock me. I'm sure the NFL knows regardless. Anyone have a link?
ReplyDelete1:07 What is wrong with you? Is your pathetic life that bad? I suggest you get help.
ReplyDeleteI don't want to sound like a jerk, but all the coaching changes are in place and the players are aware of everything from a personnel perspective going forward. However, the New Haven Register has yet to update the many loyalists and supporters that follow this blog....very strange .
ReplyDeleteWe have yet to update the football website. Rick Flanders is still listed as DC. What gives?
ReplyDeleteChris; Time to get on the ball with updates concerning staff changes.
ReplyDeleteI've always gotten the impression that Yale football doesn't give two you-know-what's about updating its football website. Example: The picture at the top is the 2010 football team.
ReplyDelete5:48:
ReplyDeleteIf you think football's bad, check out heavyweight crew. It's still showing last year's roster. Bummer
The lack of detail to website updates In the big picture is not something I'd fall on my sword about, but lack of detail to keep alum and supporters informed via Yale website , digital media and social media needs to be addressed if I'm the A.D. And if I'm Reno and the football program, don't be a dumb ass and realize how this can be leveraged to your benefit and the teams as it relates to recruiting, fundraising, alum support ect. Your youth has been reluctantly tolerated as a coach, but should be leveraged as someone in touch with today's mediums to generated excitement and awareness around your team.
ReplyDeleteYou troll. Just trying to get information you do not deserve.
ReplyDelete"Your youth has been reluctantly tolerated as a coach" WHAT? Hey, maybe what you are not being told is what you shouldn't know right now - for one reason or another. Huh?
Flanders is still pictured on the website
