This is a poor performance. Feel bad for Morgan.
We punted only twice all night. But leaving 17-21 points on the table was just too much to overcome. Injuries to Sebby Little, Deshawn Salter and Bo Haines (again) only add to the pain.
Lousy performance overall.
Tired of seeing defenders not wrapping up, and instead just throwing their bodies at ball carriers. And DB's not looking back for the ball when the WR gets behind them. Defensive coaching leaves a lot to be desired.
Roberts is fantastic when everything is just right. When he's pressured or the opponent has momentum, he gets rattled and commits all sorts of mistakes. Forcing throws into coverage, telegraphing throws, and losing accuracy.
The injury situation is beyond the point where it's bad luck. Makes one question the conditioning program and technique coaching in general.
Two horrible performances in the two most important league games to date. That doesn't bode well for November. 5-5 is looking quite possible.
I didn't see anything tonight we can't correct. A 4-2 record isn't bad considering we have played only a single game at home. I doubt that Yale has ever opened with one home game in our first six. And I'm virtually certain this is the first season since the 1800s that we have played a majority of our games on the road.
I'd have to agree more with 10:55pm, this was tough to watch. The defense was most discourage in this one. Giving up crucial big plays basically all night long. DB play has definitely been less than desirable. It seems like we do alright with coverage in front of us and reacting to the underneath routes, but consistently let WR's take the top off of our D and we seem to never play the long ball in the air. Offensively we were not as bad, but the 2 INT's in the end zone (3 overall) were just too much for us to overcome. Coming out of both of those drives (where we did successfully move the ball) without any points and worse off giving the ball up in the end zone turned it to be the death of us.
Thank God Im not a football coach or Qb for Yale. You have good games and bad games.That was the worst I have seen in many years. Coach you should have sat him down , so you can get your other kids some game time experience.
Morgan is a good Qb but he forces that ball in and you cant do that, That is a missed opportunity for Rafe or Tre to get ready for next season. God Bless ya

Watching Morgan Roberts yesterday, I couldn't help but wonder if he hadn't sold his soul for last year's season success and the Devil came last night to collect. I know football is team game and no one man loses it. I know he's playing behind a less accomplished line than last year. I know one of the Yale's greatest running back's ever in now in the NFL, and I know Yale's all-time greatest receiver now works for the NFL. Finally, I know he is working with second and even now third string running backs and receivers. But his play this season has been so erratic, so uneven, so unsure and so lacking in poise from time to time that he hardly even look likes the same quarterback. That first interception down in the red-zone, when Yale was up 10-0 and looking like they FINALLY got everything together on offense, was like a punch in the gut It knocked the wind right out of them. I felt it. Seemed like the players did too. They never really recovered from it. A shame. I thought he should have been benched last night, not as a punishment, but to simply give himself a chance to get his head together.
Eh, just frustrated. Unlike the Dartmouth game, in which they were simply dominated, outplayed and maybe even overmatched, this one was winnable. And they let it get away.
Well here we go again .Wait till next year. By the time they win the title i will be in a pine box. Where is all this speed our DB are supposed to have burned all night. Have to recruit good running backs next year and lineman that are over 300lb not 265 .Also not35 tight ends that we do not use and 25 DEwe do not use . get some bigger and faster DB.Our top running back for next year Andrew Grinde from Great Falls MONT may not play anymore this year do to arm problems.
Stupid penalties need to be cut out, too. Penalties on third down that kill an offensive drive or keep the defense on the field when they would otherwise get off the field should result in an automatic trip to the bench. If a player worthy of an Ivy League education can't play smart enough, then it's time for "next man up."
In general, Yale needs to focus its obvious "Harvard envy" in the right directions. Instead of playing rap music in the Bowl before kickoffs and on third down "because Harvard does it" and adding Field Turf and a winter bubble "because Harvard does it," how about doing what it takes to go 10-0...because Harvard does it.

IF we finish 5-5,it will mean after four years of supposedly strong recruiting, Yale will be a.500 team. And the team STILL "young"! Dartmouth has eighteen seniors playing, and it shows.
If they finish 5-5, it also means that their league record would be a pathetic 2-5. For a team that was predicted to finish a solid 3rd place and have an outside shot at the title, that would be a massive failure. (Not saying it will come to that...but it certainly can, if the ship isn't righted.)
Regarding my previous statement about doing what it takes to go 10-0, IMO the priority needs to be on bringing in the best talent possible, especially in the OL and DL, ever year. Hire the best coaches possible (I'm not going to get into the never-ending anti-Reno/pro-Reno debate that goes on here; but I'm talking about all the coaches in general). Institute best-practices for offensive and defensive strategy, practice drills, strength & conditioning, recruiting (a big one), and team culture. In short, take THIS cue from Harvard: do what it takes to be the best! That mostly comes down to recruiting and admissions. Not rap music and inflatable bubbles. (Now that Harvard has added alternate uniforms, how long before Yale does the same...when instead they should be focusing on matching Harvard talent-for-talent?)
HELP SHOULD BE COMING NEXT YEAR. I ATTENDED A CHOATE FOOTBALL GAME TODAY. MICHAEL JOHNSON AND DIETER EISLEN ARE VERY GOOD D LINEMEN WITH BIG SIZE (BOTH OVER 300 LBS.). ALSO, ALEX ABELITE PLAYED VERY WELL AT LINEBACKER. A REAL STAR IS ABU DARAMY. HE RAN BACK THE INITIAL KICKOFF FOR A TOUCHDOWN. HE SCORED A TD ON A RECEPTION,TOO. MOREOVER, HE IS A VERY ELUSIVE RUNNER. HE IS VERY DIFFICULT TO TACKLE. FINALLY, I WAS IMPRESSED BY ZACH KASTENHUBER, A HARVARD RECRUIT. HE DISPLAYED MUCH TOUGHNESS AS A DEFENSIVE END.

It does seem, however, that year after year, we are told of the numerous "highly touted" recruits that will bring future Ivy titles and The Game victories to New Haven. More often than not, the eventual results are heavy on "woulda/coulda/shoulda," while the Ivy trophies and post-Game celebrations continually reside elsewhere.
There seems to be a disconnect between what the Yale braintrust thinks will bring ultimate success, and what actually does bring that success. That's why I say best practices are needed in recruiting. Every year, Harvard has a Power 5 conference-caliber OL. Not surprisingly, they win almost every game they play. Meanwhile, our ACC skill-position transfers, when healthy, can't stay within 2 TD's of a mid-level Ivy. Gee, maybe we should focus on winning some of those OL recruiting battles.
I would gladly trade four recruiting classes that are highly-touted before the fact, for one that is highly-decorated after the fact.
Just win, baby. Do what it takes. The rest is just excuses.
I think we're bringing in all the right student athletes with impressive skills and measureables. Recruiting is top notch for the FCS level and certainly comparable to Harvard the last three years. The question is then whether our players are being developed properly and whether our playcalling is sophisticated enough to match our adversaries. That's a coaching problem. Some of the coaches we bring in seem to be highly inexperienced, and I'm wondering if that is having an impact on how our players execute on game day.
Everyone who is lamenting the possibility of a 5-5 season has apparently already awarded this 4-win Yale team a victory against Columbia next week. Not so fast, my friend...
Real simple. Don't over analyze. Roberts has got to be replaced as the starter. Never have I witnessed in my 30 years following Eli football a quarterback playing so poorly rewarded with starting, playing and not being pulled for such poor execution and decision making. This is a mystery. Why???

I think if Roberts played like this last year he would have been benched. But with the amazing stats he put up last year it's difficult to bench him.
First thought Tre Moore was recruited for this offense let him play a few downs what can he do throw an interception ? Also whats going on with Jamal Locke. This kid should be playing in the games not seating on the bench.But him in the slot or running back he has great speed get him on the edge. Wildcat package would be good for him. Coach Reno let him play we see his speed on KOR use him on OFF.
Reno stated that Roberts would not be replaced as a starter.Reno we are not asking you to do that. What is being asked when he is having a bad game, sit him down to collect himself. Let him have the opportunity to observe and see the flow of the game. Also allow your 2nd. And 3rd string QB get some experience. So you don't find yourself in a hole next year. Come on Tony smart choices make it happen.

Almost all of these comments reflect concerns for coaching, not for talent of the kids. When Reno came to Yale I was all for him and said to his detractors,"Give him four years to turn things around." Time is almost up, I'm afraid. For all his critics, Jack Siedlecki went 1-9 his first year but won the Ivy championship his third, beating Dartmouth, Princeton and Harvard. That was a turn-around! No, he couldn't keep it up, but he ended his tenure with a winning record and four victories over Harvard.
It's become clear that Tyler Varga, a once-every-couple decades star, made our program appear to be much stronger than it is. I still have hope for the future, but we must stop trying to corner the market on some of the less essential positions.

Frosh Tre Moore is a gifted thrower and runner as well as a prized recruit. Why has he not had an opportunity to play in a game?
The current QB is held to a different standard than the other 21 starting positions?? Roberts is no more deserving of playing and starting than any player on the roster. Execute and perform or don't play. Unfair to entire team not to give another QB a chance!
Ridiculous to put this all on the quarterback and demand he be replaced. It's the coach who needs to be replaced, plain and simple. Really, you want a freshman quarterback? Now? As I recall, that was Reno's first move when he got here. How'd that work out? What did that say about his ability to evaluate talent? Reno has had four years and has moved the team solidly to the low end of the league. They will beat only Cornell and maybe Columbia (and that's no lock, anyone see the Columbia score against Dartmouth?) Go ahead and keep making excuses for this guy if you want but this team is going in the wrong direction. Can't wait til Chris posts the high school tape of all the new recruits this off season. That's become the highlight of the Reno era.

Injuries have played a major part in the season thus far. No other Ivy team including Harvard could be expected to win the league with this injury list. Reno will not be replaced because of this year's record. However he may be asked to make some changes. Both of his coordinators were promoted from within. He may need some new ideas especially on defense. Roberts is a good QB with the pieces in place. However he has proven he can not carry the team. He does not make the players around him better. He needs players around him to make him better.
Reno doesn't seem to have good luck with coordinators. Kevin Morris left under rumors of discord. Rick Flanders will be back in the Bowl this week, directing a defense that just held Dartmouth to 13 points. This year's offense doesn't impress. So many bubble screens that an eventual pick-six is inevitable. And the defense...well, they're spirited at times, but what started as a "young inexperienced" secondary two years ago is still giving up way too many long-gainers, and not playing the ball when beaten. So, perhaps some changes would be beneficial. But given Reno's track record w/ coordinators, good luck finding an established, successful coach who would want one of those jobs. More likely to get a tight end coach from the Big South conference who has to learn on the job.

Let's think long term. Due you think for a minute any of Reno's peers don't think on any given week that they can't out coach him and his J V coordinators. Gone are Varga, his receivers and offensive line anchored by Carberry and Chism.....all recruits from another era....Vargas old man was locked into Yale via Williams. Reno is not a players coach...kids don't like playing for him. He was third pick and will not win long-term....lets go and find a dynamic guy versus a cheerleader
What happened to that kid who made that sensational one-handed catch against Maine? Is he hurt TOO? He played in only one game.
Haenni - the one handed catch - is third string behind Little & Buric. He may play more due to Little's injury. However, TEs and running backs do not seem to be targeted much

For those of you eager to get rid of Reno, Tim Murphy was 33-37 in his first seven years at Harvard and 3-4 against Yale. Tony must have learned something from Tim in his three years on his staff.

You are correct, however, that Flanders did NOT eventually join Al's staff, despite numerous such reports in the off-season. You, 10:55, are the man. Why did we hire a previous defensive coordinator at a good UNH program and with 5 years of Division 1 coaching experience if he's not going to call the defense? Who's calling the defense?

To 4:09: Thanks for the update on Tim Murphy's career. Here's how it will compare with Tony Reno's: If Yale sticks with Reno for seven years, he too will be sub .500
Look, Yale is 4-2 overall and 3-2 on the road. That's not too shabby. Everyone knew this would be a rebuilding year for Yale with the loss of so many key starters on offense. It's too many to list but I will because the point needs to be made:
Varga
Wallace
Randell
Chrism
Carberry
Now add in a rash of injuries to key players ( I'll spare the list this time because it's even longer) to the mix. Now add in a four game road trip that ranged from Pennslyvania, to NewHampsire, to Northern Maine, and back to Pennslyvania. If a team comes out of that 4-2 the coach should be getting accolades. Instead people are calling for Reno's dismissal. Unbelievable! Think about the amazing three come from behind victories Yale had this year. That's a tribute to the head coach who keeps his players in the game no matter what the score. With most coaches Yale's record whould be 2-4, instead of 4-2. Yale is lucky to have Reno as its head football coach. Although with such fans I'm not sure Yale is deserving.

Reno isn't going any where. You people calling for his ouster are delusional. Not happy we didn't win it last year? This program is light years ahead of where we were headed. Injuries has stalled our progress. We will continue to move towards an ivy championship. To change coaches at this point would be a huge step backwards. Ask Tennessee, Miami, Nebraska, and even Michigan and Florida.
let's be real with the win/loss talk.. Bottom line the only games that count are IVY games, Yale not looking so good there!
For all the talk of the loss of Varga, Randall, Wallace, et.al., it is instructive to remember that, with them, the team's record over the past three seasons was exactly 15-15. This year it is 4-2. Technically, this team is a little ahead of the curve.
Give 'em a break!
Our conference legitimacy is defined by our out of conference wins. On a national scale who cares if we only beat each other. Harvard's ooc record does not make them a national power. Yale's win over Army, Penn's win over Villanova, Yale's win over Cal Poly have done more for the Ivy league than any Harvard win over another Ivy opponent. ESPN was in Cambridge last year because Yale beat Army.
It's all about player development if you want to create a winning structure for your team and Reno doesn't have a clue, you bring your recruits in and let them learn from the Vets from the sidelines and playing in JV games, as they mature your 2 deep should be stacked with Juniors and Seniors NOT Freshman and Sophomores. Reno screwed that up from his first day when he Sat so many of the older guys in place of his young recruits and he continues to play young guys in place of vets that He recruited! Makes no sense. So until there is some kind of player development system in place we can look forward to more of what we have been getting.
Some posters fault Reno for not playing seniors. Others fault him for not benching Roberts in favor of the freshman Tre Moore. I guess it's damned if you do, damned if you don't for Reno on this board.
what has any out of conference win done for the Ivy League? How many ivy players were invited to the national combine? how many attended any combine? how many were drafted? signed as free agents? Want to make the Ivy League Legit? start giving athletic scholarships. That might help in recruiting top talent in turn more players getting looked at for the next level and that might create some legitimacy.
Reno can go 1-9 for all I care as long as he beats Harvard. Probably get his contract renewed too.

8:13.. John, How can you say 10:04 is a hater? John the truth sometimes hurts Take a lesson from the big D1 schools look at their 2deep, count the Freshman and Sophs... not many. So take a lesson. I agree with 10:04 and that's just one problem with Yale football at present, can it be fixed.. yes.. when and by who? John your guess is as good as mine.
