Tuesday news and notes
Tony Reno told the Bulldogs at halftime of their comeback victory Saturday to “make a memory.”
They did. For the second straight week, Yale came from behind and pulled out the victory. Here’s a story from Register columnist Chip Malafronte on Yale’s ability to come back these first two games.
And some additional notes from Tuesday’s media luncheon…
DB Hayden Carlson led the team with 10 tackles on Saturday. Here’s what he had to say about the struggles early on.
“We had a lot of self-inflicted wounds,” he said. “That starts with penalties (Yale had 12). It comes down to mental execution. But as the game progressed, we played smarter. We had the confidence to make plays and get off the field on third down.”
Added Reno: “We’ve had issues with consistency right now. It’s something we need to continue to address. It comes down to mental focus on the play and on the job, and maintaining that mental focus through the drive and through the play. That’s the piece we need to improve upon. It’s a rep thing, a concentration thing. To be an upper level team, you need to have it for 60 minutes, not a shorter period of time with that.”
OL Mason Friedline and WR Bo Hines missed Saturday’s game against Cornell. DB Foye Oluokun and RB Candler Rich were both injured in the game. Reno listed all as day-to-day.
If Rich can’t go, that leaves Yale really thin at RB with just Deshawn Salter, Austin Reuland and possibly Jamal Locke. Reno said he will not move any other players to RB.
Yale’s rushing attack is averaging just 90 ypg and 2.7 ypc. With some OL dealing with injuries and illnesses during the preseason, that made it difficult to Yale’s OL to develop consistency. Reno says it will come. The complexion of the games, too, was a factor as Yale needed to throw.
“But we definitely need to improve in the run game,” Reno said.
Reno says he is really pleased with the play of QB Morgan Roberts. He is 54 of 88 for 664 yards and five TDs with just one INT.
Oluokun blocked a pair of FGs at Colgate in the season opener. Marty Moesta blocked a Cornell PAT and Hunter Roman did the same on a FG attempt against Cornell. That’s pretty impressive.
“We have the personnel to block kicks,” Reno said. “The amount this early, I’m surprised a bit. This is what we hoped for with this unit. We have guys who can jump and move the line of scrimmage.”

INJURIES
OL Mason Friedline and WR Bo Hines missed Saturday’s game against Cornell. DB Foye Oluokun and RB Candler Rich were both injured in the game. Reno listed all as day-to-day.
If Rich can’t go, that leaves Yale really thin at RB with just Deshawn Salter, Austin Reuland and possibly Jamal Locke. Reno said he will not move any other players to RB.

SUPERB PLAY FROM ROBERTS

Making memories against a team that has one win in two years?
Guys just one thing. If Rich is out for sat game were down to three players with little game experience.Make a move now there has to be someone who ran the ball in high school. Just to be on the safe side.
A quick browse of player profiles turns up at least 6 who were running backs in high school
Hope they don't have anymore injuries at running back.Reno has no plans to move any player to running back. other than the players already there.
What a coach says and then ends up doing could be quite different. If Rich is out for an extended period of time that could very well force Reno's hand. However moving your KOR specialist to RB may not be in the best interests of anyone.....
Yup 10:49 just like Harvard, playing Georgetown, Rhode Island. Talk about cellar dwellers oh kind of like you too.
Locke is certainly a fine KOR man but he's not the only option. Our PR guy looks to be a viable replacement. If Locke can help the team at RB at the expense of returning kicks, so be it.....
PR guy is Alessi. We can not move him to RB right now as we have one safety hurt already and we need him there to help that unit. He is a DB that sees the field and we need him there. I agree with 12:02PM, what is said and what is done depends on the present situation. We will have to wait to see what happens there. Blue boy, you have great intention I’m sure, as a fan. However switching someone’s position to RB now would not even put us close to the “safe side”; especially not for one game. Now is not the time to start having fire sales with people from their positions. Just because someone played RB in “high school” doesn’t put them in a position to automatically be more successful than the players who have been practicing there the entire pre-season. These guys have worked their asses off for a month and a half now, don’t you think they deserve a shot to get some reps and be successful for the team before we decide that they are not even worthy of the opportunity? I think so. If Rich is even out (because we are not sure that he is yet) it most likely will not be a long term situation (hopefully based on what I saw last week), he will be back soon if he misses any time at all. It seems like many (and unfortunately you included) don’t even want to give him a chance after only 2 games. This is irrational thinking and proposed moves. No good coaching staff would make that type of move at this point. I'm sure Salter is going to get the majority of carries if Rich does not play. Given the opportunity I think he will do fine with his increased load. Reuland will probably get some carries as well, he did fine in the spring in his coverage duties and who knows what he will do with more reps. I am willing to bet in his favor also if given his shot. That is 2 guys. If we need a 3rd, and most likely (without injury) we will not for this game (if you have watched any games recently) Locke is available and has practiced at the RB position all year so far. These are the guys they will use; this info is clearly stated in the post. If we lose 2 more guys to injury in this game then it is time to make some changes. As of right now the 4 people in the position are fine for this week. Other than that just let the boys play the game, give them the shots that they have earned and let's see how it pans out. Switching someone’s position mid-week is never the answer for that upcoming contest. Like only a few people who post (Jon Harris definitely being one of them), I have faith in our boys. GO BULLDOGS!
Well stated 12:23. Right now, we know very little about who will or will not suit up for Saturday. I agree that Rich's injury didn't appear to be serious enough to audition half the team at running back in hope (and it would be in desperate hope) to replace him.
Some reasonable and thoughtful comments, but I can't imagine that Reno is going to continue to take the 'we're a run-first offense' stance too much longer. I suspect he'll temper it with something along the lines of 'we're flexible enough to be a situation-dictating offense'.
This is borderline hilarious. Instead of trying to figure out if you have a decent running back why don't you figure out how to hold barely average teams like Cornell to less than 36 points!!!!!
12:52 = Loser troll
12:52 is not only a loser troll, he also doesn't know how many points Cornell scored.
12:52 is a magnificent speciman of a MORON.Thank You for posting with your stupidness.!!! LOL please sit down and shutup. You harvard Grad. The H need not be capitalized. GO YALE!!!!
Can Yale cut its financial aid to players based on performance?
Who do you think we are harvard.?we even allow you to post moronic statements.
Why would they do that. they allow people like you to post moronic statements.
No, aid is based on need in the Ivys.
Reuland should get a shot. He has the prototype build for a RB and he did very well in the spring. I think the staff will be pleasantly surprised with his ability in a live game.
