Definitely makes you wonder what the thought process is with the roster. You wonder if the philosophy is filling need, or stockpiling the best players you can find. Looks like one of these two philosophies are being followed. 11 TE’s when they are not used as much in the offense and 5 RB’s is a somewhat puzzling. This is the only area that Reno makes me wonder what he is doing. Obviously it is part of the plan, that hasn’t failed yet, as he continues to improve. But these numbers are lopsided.
ReplyDeleteFor the record I do think in my opinion the staff feels like the offensive strength this year is Morgan Roberts and the receiving corps. The running game is always important and needs to be a vital part for the passing game to go well. But I also think that the key offensive returners (Roberts, Buric, Little, Clemons, Siragusa, Drwal) are in the pass game; so that will be the focus.
If I had to assume I would assume from a coaching staff prospective they are going to see what they have on the roster for this year at RB and round out the recruiting of the 2016 class with some RB prospects. Here is how I look at the current RB situation.
First and foremost we cannot pigeon hole these kids expecting to see the next coming of Tyler Varga in there, because that is definitely unlikely. We all knew this was coming this year. If you have any football IQ and knew our team last year you would have known that this year was going to be a year of someone carrying the ball with very little experience if any.
In that case we are in pretty good hands with Rich (67 carries last year, had 91 the year before). He is HM All-Ivy and has good experience. He is NOT going to be Varga but I have to believe that he will be a more than serviceable and have a good year for us.
Varga got the bulk of the carries last year as he should have. Yet not considering Roberts there was a semi ”three headed monster” of Varga , Rich & Keys (with Rich and Keys having only a difference of 16 carries) that got the ball. I am assuming that unless freshman Ellerson or Debner are exceptional they are both still a year away from getting these reps, but that does remain to be seen in camp. But for now I don’t count them in the mix.
If you watched any scrimmages last year or any games that the 2nd and 3rd teamers got reps late in you were able to see Deshawn Salter in action. He seemed to have a great grasp of the offense and can run the ball well behind the bigs and get chunks of yards. He looks like he is going to pan out to be a solid back in this offense at some point. Next year could definitely be the year as I believe that right now he is the best second option to Rich, or the one that is nearest to ready.
The X factor in the group is Jamal Locke. He was changed to RB over the spring from CB. Due to injury he did not participate in spring practice so he has not had any reps at the position yet. That said there will be a learning curve. Yet if you watched the games last year you saw just what he had to offer with the ball in his hands. He has great burst and is elusive and the best speed of the bunch. He did return kicks and chewed up yards in the process. On one of the highest ranking offenses in the FCS last year he was 5th on the team in all-purpose yards behind Varga, Wallace, Randall, and Rich. Potentially he could supplement that group very nicely.
Either way the entire group are underclassmen, 1 junior, 2 sophs, & 2 freshmen. So they are all have at least 2 seasons. 5 weeks and let the competition begin.

I thought Reuland was moved to running back. Was he moved back to wide receiver? Seems like a waste of spring practice if he was.
ReplyDeleteA little surprising to see James Nicholas listed only as a DB and not an RB/DB.
