John Barton rushed for two touchdowns in Yale's 21-19 loss to Brown on Sunday.
The Yale junior varsity team fell to 0-2.
Barton capped a 56-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdowns to give Yale an early 7-0 lead. Barton also scored on a 14-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
Anthony Morales hit tight end Spencer McManes (recruited as a QB) for a 62-yard touchdown in the fourth. The Bulldogs failed on a two-point conversion attempt, which would have tied the game.
Yale fumbled and Brown recovered on its final drive. D'Amani Grayer had an interception for the Bulldogs.
Yale's junior varsity team will finish its season on Nov. 21 at Harvard.
It would be nice if they had a chance to play togetherduring the week . harvard will name the score sad for the boys.
ReplyDeleteAs someone said after the Milford game, how can Yale field a decent JV team when the best freshmen and sophomores are on the varsity 2 deep? It doesn't matter if they win so much as they get a little game experience.
ReplyDeleteThere are upper classmen that play in the JV games as well, it is not like high school. Many of those who do not get to play in the varsity games play during the JV games.
ReplyDeleteI agree with 12;25 but they should have a chance to win?
ReplyDeleteI would like to see at least 5 games. They had a chance to win.
ReplyDeleteWhich is a good thing.Gives the kids a chance to get acclimated to the program.
But as long as they get game experience 10:46 said thats all that matters.
Playing JV at Yale is a poor consolation prize for the mainly upperclassmen who don't get to play. It's like Pop Warner for grown ups. It isn't for game experience. They never practice as a team and some of them aren't even playing in their positions. There is no energy on the sidelines because they are already defeated.
ReplyDeleteI won't say that the starters on Varsity aren't the best players, but I do believe that some of these upperclassmen are better than the underclassmen on the 3 deep if they were given as much opportunity. Sad for them, but they show a lot of character for sticking in there.
Why do you believe they were not given “as much opportunity”? Do you believe there is an agenda against the “older players”? Probably so. There are a few players that were starters as freshman or sophomores that are not getting the same amount of reps now. I don’t think there is an agenda, I don’t think they were not given as much “opportunity”. I think when they were given that opportunity they did not prove that they are better than the people in front of them on the depth chart.
ReplyDeleteAs far as “sticking it out”, the meaning of sports is to teach life lessons. Sticking it out is what people do in life every day. This is what is supposed to be done, with all things that supposedly went “bad” in life, unless you just want to give up. All these boys were taught and have been encouraged through sports to continue to persevere through adversity. So much to the disbelief of many on this blog most of the boys, seniors especially, who did not get to play as much as they would have liked did not think about quitting at all. I’m sure they are much better than that. I’m sure some of the people who post on this blog would quit in the face of that adversity, and many of those people would “understand” or “agree with” those who decided to quit under those circumstances. But those who stayed most likely never even thought of it, because they are much much better than that. And thank goodness for them and that.
I think putting freshman on the varsity roster is an excuse for Reno to say he had a great recruiting class! And when the JV gets beat (as they have in 2 of their 3 games), it is an excuse to say the best freshmen are on varsity (even though they are not playing).
ReplyDeleteWe will see in coming years, but I don't think our recruiting has turned out so well. Our best players are seniors, and Reno was not here when they were recruited.
Intreresting points of view,
ReplyDeleteI believe He has recruited very
well.Reno plays the best players
he wants the best to play to win.
He gives oppertunity for players to win spots on the roster.Thats what preseason is for. This is not the same roster as it was in the 1st game .Due to injuries or people who jumped over others.
You should open up and realize that he is building a very solid program. Cheers Jon harris
Some seniors were given a chance, while others weren't. If it was a close call, then it should have been the seniors positions to lose. But it went the other way around. The seniors had to win their positions from the underclassmen. Now some of them have gotten better because of opportunity, but at the expense of the upperclassmen.
ReplyDeleteand 3:08 I know for a fact that several of the remaining seniors have seriously considered quitting, but in the end, their love for this team and their teammates prevailed.
2 games left what are you gonna do.should a could a that is familar situation on any team really. It's called perspective.I'm sorry that your sons time at Yale was not what you expected.ButI hope that is not all he leaves with in other words the experiences and friends, memories
ReplyDeletewill last a life time of happiness, wealth and riches to come.
Well put 5:55. Some of the parents that post on this blog are just disgruntled and unrealistic. I’m sure they thought their sons were better than they actually were in high school and even now. I’m also sure they thought that because their son came to “Yale” that he would be one of the better athletes on the roster and play a good amount because he got courted by teams in the Patriot league and maybe Temple or UCONN while in high school. Fact is Reno is building a program, with steady increases yearly and better talent yearly as well. He is playing his best players because he wants to win and has to win to keep his job. Those who don’t play were not good enough in their “auditions” which are practices and the pre-season, and that is the bottom line. There are no agendas or personal grudges, just the fact that he and everyone else on this squad want to win. It is the simple fact that some parent just don’t want to hear or deal with the fact that their beloved son is not “good enough” at something. It is clear that he has been accomplished in his life (he has had to have been to be athletic enough and bright enough to end up here) but at some point you just have to deal with the fact that your baby boy is not as good as someone else in something. I know it is a bitter pill to swallow as a parent, but it is life.
ReplyDeleteAnd for those seniors who considered quitting, of course they didn’t do it because they did not want to succumb to the weakness of temporary defeat. They knew they had to deal with adversity as they will in life and decided to stick it out for their own good. These are young men growing up. I’m sure you parents whose sons don’t play much hurt for them, understandably so. But the fact is playing football is much more than playing time, it’s about the experience. And whether you want to believe it or not, all the kids on this roster have had a great experience this year so far. And if they are not happy and did not have a good experience, then what does that say about that young man’s agenda on a team that has been the best this university has seen in years? Selfishness? Greed? Maybe learned at home, who knows?
Reno is doing a fine job. Many many people will disagree with him and some will just never like him, which of course is their right. You can say he didn’t “recruit” these players and this was not his “team” but the fact is and remains, that this team and this organizations has truly improved and flourished under his leadership through the last 3 years and that is FACT. There is much much more to the production of a player than just recruiting him. SOMEONE (Reno and his staff) had to nurture these young men and get the best out of them. But I’m sure someone will follow this post with “that was not Reno it was the head of the history department that works with the football team”. Things are going very well for Yale football on Tony Reno’s watch. You don’t have to like it, you can say anything you want about it, but look at the yearly records. 2-8, 5-5, and right now 7-1. Can’t change that any, it’s just factual improvement people. Live with it. Go Bulldogs.

ReplyDeleteCoach Reno is just trying to make everyone think he is recruiting better players! So, he would always play an underclassman instead of one of William's recruits. Unless, they are handily better: Randall, Varga, Wallace!
It is politics!
Wow. I am a parent of a jv player. I am not a blogger but I just want to say that my son loves being part of this football program varsity playing time or not. I kind of am taken aback by that long comment. Most of us are not disgruntled parents. We support our son and all of hs accomplishments. Tackling and running and throwing will all come to an end. A lifetime of friendships are here to stay. I hope all the "varsity" players stay safe and healthy over the next two games and every young man on those sidelines deserve credit for a season well done. We are a team. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteYou make no sense except that you have little man syndrome.Varga actually contacted Reno when he heard Tony, got the job at Yale.
ReplyDeleteDeon and Grant may have been recruited by Williams. But they have played longer in Reno's system.
Also it's not politics,IT IS THE GAME OF YALE FOOTBALL.Booyahh
Cheers Big Ears

Anyone know what time the Harvard - Yale JV game is at on Friday of next week? Does any know the record of Yale JV or Harvard JV this year?
