It's amazing that Yale can keep walking this high wire with zero defense. You keep thinking they will finally win one big with this unstoppable offense (as per most people's predictions on this blog) but then they turn everybody else's offense into Peyton Manning's Broncos. I wonder how many teams have ever averaged giving up 30 pts per game on defense (and even that number is misleadingly low because Columbia is in there, who really hasn't scored more than 7 points on anybody) and been 7 and 1. Doesn't exactly seem like a formula for success, but hey, it is amazingly entertaining to watch and if they can do it twice more they are Ivy champs. Go Bulldogs!
Yale hasn't faced a good defense yet. It is coming in two weeks and I got a feeling the old saying "defense wins championships!" will be accurate. Will be Varga, Randall and Wallace's last game and they have had a great season. Not sure how to replace Yale's best offensive weapons in history. Gonna be a rebuilding year again. Funny, how Reno did not recruit any of these players!
Reno did bring in Varga. He also brought in Morgan Roberts. How's that working out? Though how good he turns out to be as a recruiter does largely remain to be seen. He has a lot of underclassmen starting, which would suggest good recruiting, but most of them are on defense, and that defense gets torched week after week. The hope is that this astounding offense keeps finding ways, while the defense survives - and improves next year with virtually everyone back.
Some real numbers to go with the observations above about Varga's unstoppability and Harvard's defense. Harvard, 9.3 points per game on defense. Yale, 42.8 points per game on offense. So it looks like an unstoppable force will be meeting an immovable object on Nov. 22. Can't wait to see what happens.
The Game will matter whether or not Yale beats Princeton. It's still a great matchup. And while you're obviously just trying to provoke a reaction with that 48-16 prediction - I'm sure you'll get a "hater troll" from whoever it is on here that repeats that like a simpleton - I will say this: the 16 part is just dumb. No one will hold this offense to 16 points. In fact, I would like to know the percentage of drives in this entire season they did not score on. I can't imagine it could even be fifty percent.
Know one thought this team would win 7 games.I for one am sure and true Yale fans are very happy for the team. Looking forward,to the Pton game and see Yale payback this team for the last years game. Yours Truly Jon Harris
Yale has not played a defense even close as good as Harvard's D. They can stop the run and defend the pass. The best defense Yale has played is probably Dartmouth. Look at the post that UNH game up to Dartmouth and it is similar in points the H def game up against H.
No way Yale gets over 20 in "the Game" unless it gets out of hand - could be similar to what H did to Princeton.
As the parent of a former player let me extend my congratulations to all the seniors and their parents as they deal with the emotions of this week that will culminate in them getting introduced Saturday for their last time in the Bowl. What a bittersweet day; I will never forget it. Thanks for all the blood, sweat, and effort left on the field as a Yale Bulldog. It is much appreciated, men. I know I will be there and cheering loudly for each and every one of you. And may you all have wonderful lives and memories of your time as a Bulldog. And oh yeah, go crush Princeton after hugging your moms and dads.
"Even as close to good " as Harvard 's--are you joking man? Army D held Stanford to 14 points in first Half, did you notice that? Is Dartmouth D materially weaker than Harvard's? I don't think so. Y exceeded 40 vs Army and scored over 30 against Dartmouth. o reason we can't score four or more TDs vs. Johnnies.
Very nicely said 4:59pm. These boys have played their hearts out and left nothing on the field. They will will always remember their years as a Bulldog. Congratulations Class of 2015. You have made us all proud.
Harvard's defense has never truly been tested. Who have they really played aside from Dartmouth and Princeton? (Princeton playing its worst game in years). Harvard's weak schedule is inflating its stats. I would love to see it playing a school like UNH.
Connor Hempel is a great quarterback, but not entirely healthy and with some limitations. During the Dartmouth game, he was held to 8-18 in passing for a mere 94 yards.
At this point, it's a complete toss up. Yale won't be resting Varga like in previous games, or calling it conservative on 4th and 1. Win or lose the Princeton game, November 22nd will be for all the marbles.
4:59 and 5:55 you are so right. These young men have played their hearts out and win or lose the next few games, everyone knows that and knows they are well trained and disciplined well coached and the game is being played right. People here seem to forget that beyond Varga, Roberts and Randall there are many bread and butter without whom this could NOT have happened. They set the groundwork on which the others have the opportunity to do special things and make it possible to win despite weaknesses that come from injuries and youth. Candler Rich, the entire O Line, Jamal Locke, Darius Monora, Leo Haenni, Cole Champion, Cazzeta, and many others. And let's not forget that the hard work has also been rewarding and fun, that's what my son and his friends say anyway. Win or lose, the season is a success. Brown was a damn fine team. Now let's please go beat another one -Princeton.
It's like Christmas,I know but come on.Alot of people and I have been waiting along time for this moment. My brother Mike,Stanley, Walt,I wish my Dad was still alive He is the one that gave me this afliction. BEAT PRINCETON BLEED THE ORANGE BLOOD OUT OF THE TIGERS Jon Harris
9:29 - Nice sentiments, but you mentioned basically all underclassmen. I meant to acknowledge the seniors the week of their last game in the Bowl. These are the guys we get to thank and cheer for the last time at home Saturday: Carbery, Cazzetta, Chism, Conklin, Cook, Dunion, Frank, Hunt, Johnson, Keys, LaTesta, Manu, Randall, Schmittgens, Shoemaker, Stanney, Toms, Varga, Vaughan, Wallace. Thanks, boys.
8:20AM well put. In the pre-season people bashed Reno for playing so many underclassmen (freshman and sophomores especially) and adamantly told everyone that we could not win that way. This has translated into a 7-1 season so far and a team that has been on a mission to put their absolute best out on that field each week. There is no doubt that the youth of this team has made a great and positive impact and obviously the coaching staff knows much more than the average uninformed person making posts on this blog.
Yet it cannot be overlooked what a great and important job ALL of the senior class has had on this team and its success. Games are won in the off season, pre-season, and on the practice field. This senior class has clearly been the glue of this team. From the major contributors to the guys who are “behind the scenes” running the scout teams and keeping moral and control of this team the senior class has been the catalyst to all of their success. They have been supportive, hardworking, positive, and poised in their contributions and leadership of this group. Each season means more to the seniors than anyone else on the team emotionally, because it is their last. This bunch of seniors did more for this program this year in particular than any one of us know and for this not only should they be applauded, but I hope it can and will end with just what they desire…2 more wins. Congratulations to the team and the senior class especially and I will be looking forward to cheering loudly for them this upcoming Saturday as they run out on their home field one last time representing their university and their football family. Go Bulldogs…
Congrats to the seniors. It has been a long and difficult struggle for most of them. I can't say enough about the character of the seniors who stayed on the team through a difficult transition. To be clear, I am not a Reno fan but rather a Yale football fan. Give Reno whatever credit you want, but the seniors on offense have made the difference this year, and their determination and talent make up for the defense giving up over 30 points per game. And if you add Morgan Roberts into the group, as he is a red-shirt junior, one can argue that upper classmen leadership makes the difference especially in close games. Can you think of any three players in the Ivy league with better ball instincts than Wallace and Randall when the ball is in the air and they must make a catch. Or, when everyone in the stadium knows that Tyler Varga is going to get the ball on anything less than 3 and 3, and he has the determination along with Chism and Carbery to move the pile and the chain. That is not as much Reno as it is the determination of the guys on offensive. And, thanks for the new offensive coordinator. Morgan is much better qb today. As for the seniors on defensive and I include LaTesta (who should be playing at his best position, cornerback), you have learned valuable life lessons playing football at Yale. To all of the seniors playing their last game in the Yale bowl against Princeton, remember that football is and will always be the ultimate team game. The friendships you have formed over the years, are life long friendships. I know that all of the guys you have practiced and played with over the last four years are rooting for you to beat Princeton, and then Harvard. So, to the seniors, it has been a great run this year. Keep it up.
10:17AM, wonderful you don’t like Reno, that doesn’t matter at all. His players obviously do, from top to bottom. His seniors obviously trust and like him because they have played hard for him as has the rest of his team. And if they didn’t, and were not connected to him, this season would not be as successful as it has been. So credit goes to them, AND him, like it or not.
10:50 AM let me translate you for you. When teams win it’s the players who are to credit and when they lose it’s the coaches’ fault? You are an idiot who does not know sports. Why don’t you just intelligently state (which must be impossible for you) that you just don’t like Reno like 10:17AM did and call it a day. Like him or hate him, he got this team to do better so far than you and all the rest of you “Reno bashers” thought he would, so that is a win for him and the program, which must make you sick.
I'm as excited as anyone about the possibility of winning the Ivy League championship. However, let's be realistic. We do not have one quality win. 6 of our wins are against opponents that have won a total of 11 games and most of those 11 wins are against terrible teams - Cornell, Columbia, Georgetown, etc. Army could be called a quality win, but they were terrible against us. Not knocking anyone because a team has no control over their schedule, but Yale has not shown that they are a good team at all this year. They cannot stop anyone and without Varga (actually a Tom Williams recruit with Reno closing the deal) the offense doesn't scare anyone. I think they'll struggle and eventually beat Princeton at home and lose convincingly to Harvard at their place.
Who has Harvard beat other than the teams we have? Dartmouth, OK they have that. Holy cross (4 wins) Georgetown (2 wins) and the rest of the Ivy teams. Is it because they have won 1 more game than us and won the Ivy championship last year that they get the nod at being SO much better than us? An offense that no one is scared of, please, stats don’t lie. You may not want to admit it, but the offense has done a great job; and the defense has done well enough to win all but one game.
You 11:22AM have done a great job of proving that facts. That there are some, MANY that will not give Yale, Reno, or anyone involved with this program any credit on this season unless they win the last 2 games and the Ivy championship. Of course, true supporters hope that will be the case. In addition, win or loss, the truest of true Yale football fans will be proud of the season these boys put together. And you will find some “I told you so” moment to highlight if it doesn’t. Great work pal. So sad.
O for the love of heaven. "We do not have one quality win." Huh? The idea is to win against the teams you play and the Dawgs have done that in all but one game. Yes, they let Dartmouth -a good team -get away(they could have won it -it wasn't out of reach) but yes they won against brown -a team which has been getting better and better all season. If Yale beats Princeton, which you suggest they will (hope you are right) they will have won EIGHT games. Please. The offense doesn't scare anyone without Varga? You mean Roberts, Wallace and Randall don't scare anyone? And others behind are there to step up. And next year the defense will be more experienced and have the injured back.Let's hope they CAN beat Harvard -anything can happen on a given day -but if they don't and have won 8 or even 7 games, the program will have shown itself on the right course. Reno is a good coach, he is all in, he has the program on the right track, and the kids and everyone else know it. Kudos to all - a big shout out to the seniors - 8:20 is right - and the coaches and the alumni. Naysayers, go home.
I don't understand the "quality wins" concept. Yale is in the IVY LEAGUE, where teams are not supposed to be very good. The idea is to beat your Ivy League peers and others of the same level. Is that too hard to understand?
I think you cannot be a Reno fan, and yet still respect the fact that the team has made great strides, Reno has recruited really good student athletes, and the guys play hard. For me, the senior leadership and Morgan Roberts on the offensive side of the ball have been the tipping point in making this a very successful and exciting season. As for Reno, I disagree with his decision to build a defense with freshman and sophomores. Given the talented seniors on offense, I think that they had and have a few upperclassman who could have made the defense better. Given the points let up on defense so far, I do not see the upside as yet from playing the freshmen on defense, and sitting upperclassmen that also have talent. This is where I refuse to get both feet on the Reno bus. We can agree to disagree whether any of the upperclassmen on the team (including those who elected not to play) are a good as some of the freshman and sophomores, and whether the points per game would be more or less. We will never know. And, I would be the first to say that if Yale runs the table, coach Reno deserves the credit for bring together the guys, making tough decisions on who gets the play, and bringing the kids a championship. And, even if the guys do not win a championship, the seniors can look back on a great season including the win over Army, and know they were part of a special football program. You can respect someone for his accomplishments even if you don't like the methods.
Among the youngest guys on this team are the members of the defensive backfield. They were burnable last year. as freshmen, and this. Does this suggest any improvement? The stats suggest not. My sense, however, that they are a bit better this year, possibly because of an improved pass rush. Dont forget too that in our two closest Ivy League games (Dartmouth and Brown) we faced two very hot quarterback with pinpoint accuracy on their long passes. Princeton will be a good test of whether we have improved enouugh to handle Hempel in Cambridge. Reno is as aware as anyone that defending the pass has been our biggest weakness. Bob Semple
12:32 you are to be commended because you state a good point in an appropriate, rational way. Whether you are wrong or right is another thing: I think it is probably more complicated than you think, but I may be wrong as well. The point is you have a done a good job presenting your view appropriately. You are a real Yale fan, not a troll and it is easy to accept your view as a real possibility, even if one does not agree.
Agreed and it doesn't help at all that the two CBs are very inexperienced freshmen. And, #34 needs to step it up. He almost single-handedly lost the game for Yale on Saturday. Yale is in big trouble if they cannot get the secondary to improve dramatically.
Finally, thank you 12:32PM, for doing exactly what is welcomed. Acknowledging the positives, bringing up some negatives, and stating your points intelligently. In addition stating that you still have issues with methods of the coaching staff but observing a job well done in the midst. I’d love for you to have identified yourself, but it is what it is. Moreover I hope those uneducated unintelligent readers who decide to post can take some lessons from you in that you can disagree with things and acknowledge that things need to be fixed and or changed, without merely saying that you “don’t like Reno” or something about him without giving some concrete intelligent evidence. Because as you stated “You can respect someone for his accomplishments even if you don't like the methods”. Hope to hear from you again.
Putting more pressure on the QB could really help our VERY weak secondary and we do have DL guys and LB'S that can do that. There was virtually none against the Brown QB and when there was it was so predictable it was silly. I would love to see the Coaches get creative and figure out how to help these kids in the secondary.
4:02 Is correct! Number 34 was beaten three times for a touchdown and a two point conversion. I do not understand why 90% or more of the time the cornerbacks are 10-15 yards off the line of scrimmage.
Great win for the team. A little concerned about the team falling behind early and the number of points the defense is allowing. As most stated very few saw 7-1. However as most Yale FB fans know, if they don't win the next two, it's progress, but losing to Princeton and especially Harvard eventually gets you fired.
I do agree that everyone ignores the upperclassmen and give way to much credit to the freshmen and sophmores on this blog.
As I indicated earlier, we will see how the season plays out.
4;02 Is correct. Number 34 was beat for three touchdowns and a two point conversion. The defensive coordinator needs to get on the ball and have a scheme which supports the speed of the defensive backs.
How about some credit to the real genius behind Yale's success this year - Joe Conlin, and perhaps Tony Reno for finally resolving the issue between him and Morris and letting Conlin have at it. He has essentially the same weapons as last year (with better health to be sure) and has just made it happen offensively. He has made Morgan Roberts a completely different player. I see him as a guy who will be gone from Yale soon and making his way up the coaching ladder. Let's enjoy it while we can with this offense he runs. Now on the defensive side... well, all you can say is thank God we score a lot.
If by chance Yale loses the final two games, Yale will be in 4th place in the Ivy League. If Yale beat Princeton, and loses to Harvard they will end up in 3rd place.
Reno and deserves all the credit. Will be a real success to come in 3rd or 4th place.
If that happens this year will be a failure. I guess we were picked to come in 4th place in preseason but after watching the team play and stay healthy we want to win it all. We have Varga, Randall and Wallace - three of the best in Yale History! We are losing these guys after this year, and I see no replacements for that caliber of players. If we don't win the next two games, we are back into that Williams average team funk!
Actually Yale was picked to be in 5th place and has far exceeded expectations. Wallace, was'nt even in the equation.he is the most underated player and is one of many gems, on this team. You think Yale got nothing.you have no idea what you are saying. I really like that all of these remarks are archived. It just shows what einsteins actually know about these teams. Hard enough to see how a team will do.But to say next year Yale wiill stink.Ignorance Beat Princeton well Jon Harris Reflect on August and September Remarks see what was written
I agree. "we are back into that Williams average team funk" Get outta here. We were estimated to be fifth. But whatever. This team is spirited, enthusiastic, and believing. It's a totally different team, whatever happens. Troll, begone.
There may be a way to stop Varga in the Ivy League, but there are only two weeks to try and figure out what it is. What a performance.
ReplyDeleteA great day to be a Bulldog fan!

An offense that no one is scared of, please, stats don’t lie. You may not want to admit it, but the offense has done a great job; and the defense has done well enough to win all but one game.
ReplyDeleteYou 11:22AM have done a great job of proving that facts.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand the "quality wins" concept. Yale is in the IVY LEAGUE, where teams are not supposed to be very good. The idea is to beat your Ivy League peers and others of the same level. Is that too hard to understand?
ReplyDeleteI think you cannot be a Reno fan, and yet still respect the fact that the team has made great strides, Reno has recruited really good student athletes, and the guys play hard.
ReplyDelete11:13, this is 10:50.
ReplyDeleteRegarding my post. Obviously sarcasm escapes you.

ReplyDeleteAgreed and it doesn't help at all that the two CBs are very inexperienced freshmen. And, #34 needs to step it up. He almost single-handedly lost the game for Yale on Saturday. Yale is in big trouble if they cannot get the secondary to improve dramatically.
ReplyDeleteFinally, thank you 12:32PM, for doing exactly what is welcomed.

AGREE WITH 2:24
ReplyDeletePutting more pressure on the QB could really help our VERY weak secondary and we do have DL guys and LB'S that can do that. There was virtually none against the Brown QB and when there was it was so predictable it was silly. I would love to see the Coaches get creative and figure out how to help these kids in the secondary.
ReplyDelete4:02 Is correct! Number 34 was beaten three times for a touchdown and a two point conversion. I do not understand why 90% or more of the time the cornerbacks are 10-15 yards off the line of scrimmage.
ReplyDeleteGreat win for the team. A little concerned about the team falling behind early and the number of points the defense is allowing. As most stated very few saw 7-1. However as most Yale FB fans know, if they don't win the next two, it's progress, but losing to Princeton and especially Harvard eventually gets you fired.
ReplyDeleteI do agree that everyone ignores the upperclassmen and give way to much credit to the freshmen and sophmores on this blog.
As I indicated earlier, we will see how the season plays out.

4;02 Is correct. Number 34 was beat for three touchdowns and a two point conversion. The defensive coordinator needs to get on the ball and have a scheme which supports the speed of the defensive backs.
ReplyDeleteHow about some credit to the real genius behind Yale's success this year - Joe Conlin, and perhaps Tony Reno for finally resolving the issue between him and Morris and letting Conlin have at it.
ReplyDeleteIf by chance Yale loses the final two games, Yale will be in 4th place in the Ivy League. If Yale beat Princeton, and loses to Harvard they will end up in 3rd place.
ReplyDeleteReno and deserves all the credit. Will be a real success to come in 3rd or 4th place.

ReplyDeleteIf that happens this year will be a failure.
Actually Yale was picked to be in 5th place and has far exceeded
ReplyDeleteexpectations.
Wallace, was'nt even in the equation.he is the most underated player and is one of many gems,
on this team.
You think Yale got nothing.you have no idea what you are saying.
I really like that all of these remarks are archived. It just shows what einsteins actually know about these teams.
Hard enough to see how a team will do.But to say next year Yale wiill stink.Ignorance
Beat Princeton well

I agree. "we are back into that Williams average team funk" Get outta here. We were estimated to be fifth. But whatever. This team is spirited, enthusiastic, and believing. It's a totally different team, whatever happens. Troll, begone.
