Ivy League Weekly Awards
From the Ivy League...
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Yale junior quarterback Morgan Roberts (Charlotte) set a school single-game record for completion percentage and equaled the school mark for touchdowns as the Bulldogs rolled 51-13 over Cornell in their Ivy League opener. Roberts completed 26-of-30 passes for an impressive 86.6 completion percentage and tossed five touchdowns, connecting with nine different receivers. He totalled 312 passing yards, hitting numerous receivers on long pass plays, and added eight rushing yards.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Dartmouth junior defensive back Frankie Hernandez (Miami) enjoyed his finest game by tying for the team lead with a career-high 11 tackles -- one of which went for a loss -- breaking up two passes and recovering a fumble in the Big Green's first victory over Penn in seven years. In his first year as the starter at nickelback, Hernandez took advantage of a fumbled snap in the second quarter and pounced on the loose ball to set up the third Dartmouth touchdown of the afternoon. One of his two pass breakups came on a fourth-down play in the fourth quarter that ended any Quaker hopes of a miraculous comeback.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Cornell sophomore punter Chris Fraser (Potomac, Md.), the Ivy League's top punter, had another outstanding game in the Big Red’s loss to Yale. Fraser punted a career-high eight times and averaged 42.5 yards per kick. He pinned two inside the 20 and two went more than 50 yards, including a 61-yarder. He leads the Ivy League in punting average by more than a yard per attempt and ranks 18th nationally in punting average at 41.8 yards per boot.
CO-ROOKIES OF THE WEEK
Cornell freshman safety Nick Gesualdi (Sykesville, Md.) had a game-high nine tackles, including eight solo stops, in just his second collegiate start in the Big Red's loss to Yale. He entered the contest with five career stops after making his first career start last weekend. For the season, he ranks first among all Ivy League freshmen in tackles with 14.
Yale freshman defensive back Hayden Carlson (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) led all Bulldog tacklers with nine overall stops, including six solo efforts, in a decisive road victory at Cornell. Carlson played a key role in a Yale defense that allowed the Big Red just one score and only 189 yards of total offense.
