Here’s a quick review and some reaction on Saturday’s scrimmage against Brown.

Yale won the scrimmage 27-17. It ended late in the fourth quarter because of lightning.

Quarterbacks could not be hit, and Deon Randall and Tyler Varga both sat out. Sophomore LB Brian Sykes broke his leg and is out for the season.

The defensive controlled the line of scrimmage early. The offense started off slow, but improved as the game went on. The offensive line looked strong and freshman RB DeShawn Salter was impressive.

“He gives us a legit fourth running back who can go in the game,” Tony Reno said. “We have a lot of options there.”

LB Will Vaughan got some action and seems healthy, as he suffered a minor injury earlier in the preseason.

K Kyle Cazzetta seems to have an edge in the FG and punting battle, while Bryan Holmes could be handling kickoffs.

IMPACT FRESHMEN

One reader asked which freshmen have made the biggest impact so far. Here’s a few: OL Jon Bezney, DT Nick Crowle, TE Conor Furey, LB Matt Oplinger, RB Deshawn Salter and the four WRs Jake Dehart, Ross Drwal, Mike Siragusa and Chris Williams-Lopez.

QB UPDATE

Well Morgan Roberts seems to have the starting job locked up and Logan Scott appears to be the No. 2.

So who next on a team that’s carrying nine quarterbacks?

Reno says freshmen Stephen Barmore, Rafe Chapple and Andrew Johnson are the trio competing for the No. 3 spot.

Former Yale assistant Mike Sanford will return to Connecticut on Saturday. Sanford is now the Boise State offensive coordinator. Boise State will face UConn on Saturday. UConn beat writer Jim Fuller caught up with Sanford.
