Wolfson names Tom Williams head coach

Wolfson has named Tom Williams its new head coach, according to the Florida Times-Union.
Williams abruptly resigned as Yale football coach in 2011 after his claims of being a former Rhodes Scholarship candidate came into question.

Would take Williams back in a heartbeat. Got tripped up on the Rhodes scholarship deal which was not bright. Still a Stanford grad and had great coaching experience. Reno probably lied about making the honor roll at Worcester community college if you checked his resume. Happy for Tom.

Get serious. He couldn't coach. He couldn't recruit. He couldn't tell the truth. That said, it's good he found work.

8:02, why? And why are you so down on Reno? 2-8 in year one, 5-5 in year two. That is quite a good improvement for one year. Williams had the same improvement in his first two years; 3 games. 4-6 year one, 7-3 year two, so why was he better? Then 5-5 the next year. In fact He took over for Siedlecki who’s last 3 seasons were 8-2, 9-1, & 6-4. Williams clearly was handed a better more talented squad than Reno was and only won 2 more games in his first year; and then he ends up lying about his Rhodes Scholar candidacy. So why would you rather have him? There is no reason to be down on Reno at all yet. Until he doesn’t show improvement there are no real grounds to not like or support him. What is your deal? And everyone else who bashes Reno at that…??

Frustration with Coach Reno, or any Yale Coach, will continue until Yale beats Harvard again.

Why does Harvard have a game-changer at quarterback every year and we can't find one?

I'm not sure getting a job as a high school head football coach is a step up from his last two jobs as college assistants. But at least he's back in a part of the country where he's comfortable.

His recruits, my recruits blah blah blah. Get your players ready to play that's your job, coach them. As for comparing Reno and Williams after 3 years Williams was 16-14. Reno is 7-13 after two years so if he goes 9-1 he will have the same record as Williams after three years. 10-0 he would be one game up. That's how you measure reality, wins and losses.

Fact is, Reno was Yale's 3rd, at best, choice. Why our 1st class university has to settle for that is a mystery to me. One would think that Yale would be a coveted position and would draw a very high caliber coach. I'm not bashing Reno, but 6-4 this season seems to me to be a reach. 5-5 is more likely.

Ah, but the first two choices, from Georgetown and Holy Cross, have had mediocre records,at best, since Reno came to Yale.

williams leaving is ok ,the wheels on the bus were starting to fall off.
Reno looks like the wheels are back on.

Georgetown and holy cross?? Where do you guys get your information? Brown was number 1 and Reno was number 2. That is a fact!

The racist yale fans will pump Reno and his recruits till the sun comes up. If Yale didn't have Deon Randall, Hank Furman and Chris Smith last year they would have gone 2-8. Reno needs to post a perfect season to top the 3 year record of Williams, the rest in not debatable.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Anonymous7:46 AM

10:42, really? Furman missed or was well under 100% for most of the year! Smith didn't play after the Dartmouth game and yes Randall is easily Williams best recruit. But the reality is Reno staff has recruited far better than Williams AND Williams had far better talent when he took the job (Stoller, Moran, Haynes, Thomas, and the list goes on). Reno and Co. May not win more games in the first three years but will prove to be the right hire. If you don't believe that, go ask Furman, Randall and Palin personally!

  13. Anonymous10:05 AM

How if he won't win more games will he prove to be the right hire? What else is he doing?

Thank you for clarifying matters, 7:46. Coach Williams single-handedly took an O.K. program and ran it onto the rocks. He failed to realize you need more than two or three good recruits per class. Coach Reno is rebuilding it, and this is only his second recruiting class. But you'll never be able to convince 10:42 that "Fourth and Twenty-Two" didn't get a raw deal.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Anonymous12:48 PM

Don't be dumb. Reno has two guys on the roster that can carry the team all the way, Randall and Varga... if they are healthy. Find a QB to fit this and we will be playing at Harvard for all the marbles! Sometimes you just need a little luck and it all falls in to place.

10:42 tisk, tisk what a thought process, you have such a delusional way of thinking....

  17. Anonymous1:07 PM

I agree with 10:39 Williams was terrible as a recruiter. Reno has had to overcome Williams poor recruiting. Name one Williams recruit who had an impact on last years team beside Randall.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Anonymous2:07 PM

Fourth and twenty two, with the best punter in the Ivy League, and Harvard having no time outs with less than two minutes to play - That's what really did Williams in. It was just a matter of time for Yale to find an excuse. What's sad is the players really liked him.

As for Reno, it was his former players at Yale who campaigned the hardest for him!

  19. Anonymous7:41 PM

7-13 after two years, I'm just saying. He left a handful of wins on the table. His no huddle philosophy destroys his own defense and forces them to play way more plays then they should. A first year offensive coordinator and a defense that has no plan will make it very hard for a winning season. The QB situation hasn't been addressed, they want to run with the QB. No QB they have is a runner. How long are we going to wait for this to turn around?

2:07 pm is absolutely right, guys who had played for Reno when he was a Yale assistant pushed really hard for his hire. I rejoiced when he was chosen. Now it's his team and his players, and 2014 is Yale's time. Lots of wins, and then you doubters will shut up.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Anonymous8:34 AM

7:41 i agree there were a couple more wins in there but there were a couple wins that could have been loses as well especially according to people who post on this forum! I think you will be surprised to see the strides this program makes in the next two years. How many Williams recruits were turning down BCS offers? I don't see any but that's just my opinion I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Anonymous10:21 AM

No Reno recruit has turned down a true BCS offer. Guys have turned down MAC schools, WAC and FCS Schools.

I believe that Egu made a Pac-12 commitment (Cal) before deciding to come to Yale instead.

Anyway, none of that stuff will matter when the 2014 team, with a solid winning record, walks victoriously off the Harvard Stadium turf this November.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Anonymous6:21 PM

The coaching staff at Cal was fired, the new staff didn't keep him.

    10:21: What about Jon Bezney?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Anonymous10:22 PM

You can add Mason Friedline to that mix..

    ReplyDelete
  28. Anonymous11:00 PM

Friedline and Bezney could have gone to FBS schools. They are at Yale for a reason, none of which have to do with football. they lack the competitive gene and chose to be students. Both could quit football tomorrow and still graduate from Yale.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Anonymous6:57 AM

so every Ivy League football player and athlete for that matter "lacks" the competitive gene? don't disrespect these kids like that! every kid at Stanford could walk away tomorrow and graduate from Stanford, no?? But according to you, because they chose Stanford they have the competitive gene? boy have you missed the boat.

  30. Anonymous2:04 PM

So 11:00 pm: How often have you gone up against the likes of Messrs. Bezney, Egu, and Friedline? If so, how did you fare?
I hope our rivals are afflicted with posters as wrong-headed and obnoxious as many of ours.

He wasn't competitive enough to try and block a 5 technique in the PAC 12 so who really cares. Didn't have enough confidence to compete for playing time at a high level.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Anonymous7:12 PM

Sarkiesien, was licking his chops about this kid.Mason wanted to go a different way.
But what ever, he's balling for the Bulldogs..

    ReplyDelete
  34. Anonymous9:45 PM

I'm sure Sark based his whole recruiting effort on a guy who didn't have the mental makeup to play in the PAC 12.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Anonymous10:18 PM

9:45, just because he chose not to go play in the PAC 12 doesn’t by any stretch of the means mean that he didn’t have the mental make-up. Making a decision to go to the Ivy league isn’t one that is always made by players as a result of them not having the right “mental make-up” to play on the highest level. That thought is absurd. Take another angle to deface the program, Reno and what he is doing rather than bashing the kids desires to compete. That’s weak…

    ReplyDelete
  36. Anonymous11:23 PM

I have read so many negative comments on this board. but 9:45 you should be ashamed of yourself.
You have nothing better to do than to bash and mutilate a kid.
Do feel better about yourself,No need to be a bully just go away...

  37. wyldebill1:54 AM

I'm sure the many Ivy Leaguers who've gone on to the NFL all lacked the "mental make-up" and "the competitive gene" and "didn't have enough confidence to play at a higher level"...

Yeah, I'd be curious whether any other Ivy team gets this much cyber-bashing. Look, I've loved Yale football since B.D. and Cal, and it's frustrating we only have 3 titles since '82. But better days are coming under Tony Reno.

I'm not a blind polyanna about Yale sports -- it's time Yale seriously considered hiring a new baseball coach. Sorry, but tying for this year's Rolfe division title with an 11-10 league mark is not a promise of titles to come; Stuper's last was in '95, in a four-team division. That's terrible. High time for new blood.

Many Ivy League players in the nfl??? 10 kids have got drafted since 2004. That's give or take 1 out of 800 kids a year. Ivy is surely the furthest thing from a feeder to the NFL. People bash Yale more then any other team because of the coach. plain and simple.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Anonymous11:48 AM

10:20…Ivy League football is D1AA. I’m sure most D1AA conferences (give or take a few) around the country have close to the same numbers of people getting drafted as well; that is the bottom line. These are the places that free agents are found in most cases. One could argue that the level of accomplish on and off the field is much greater given the academic expectations of Ivy league football players on a regular basis compared to these other so called “high achieving” academic institutions that are pumping kids out into the NFL. Like UNC for example. Kids from the Yale football are graduating at a 97% graduation rate, which I’m sure is higher than the highly accredited UNC. Furthermore I’m POSITIVE Yale FB players are not taking some of these “basket weaving” classes that these players at some of these other universities are taking, and I assure you all the Yale Bulldogs can read at an appropriate level…

And to you “Wyldebill”, I agree, better days ARE coming under Tony Reno. You are correct, 3 Ivy League titles since 82’ is not a flattering stat. But look at the numbers for everyone else since then. Considering that was your designated starting point.

Penn leads the way with 15
    Harvard has 9
Dartmouth has 5 (none since 96’)
Princeton has 5 (including this year)
    Brown has 3
Cornell has 2 (none since 91’)
    Columbia has none

So really, with the exception of Penn and Harvard, we are basically right in the mix with everyone else. The reality is that we are all chasing Penn and Harvard; which of course becomes tough based on our rivalry with them. None the less Reno HAS shown improvement in the last 2 years and there is no reason not to support him going forward; unless he gives us a reason not to. Until then, we are definitely on the upswing!! GO BULLDOGS..!!

The Colonial Athletic Conference has produced 21 NFL Draft Picks in seven years. Not really similar.

Apples and Oranges,Scholie ,Non scholies. DO YOU UNDERSTAND.
NFL will find a player,if said player is good enough. So it really does'nt matter. Some players would like to take a shot at the next level. That is a normal process.
As said before, these young men are looking at the future of what will be instead of what might be.

  42. Anonymous10:14 PM

Correct football is not important to them the same way academics are. It's the Ivy League that's how it works fellas. Why it's a shame Reno runs kids off the team and bullies them. No need to do that, it's still a fun competitive league. Very hard to get fired because nobody really cares that much about it. No stress involved being a coach here expect for a few bloggers. The check still clears every other week.

    Exactly 2:41…

    Adios 5:59…good riddance…it’s a blog…who’s the real moron…??

And 3:43…do you know what give or take means?

Big South conference 12 drafted in the last 10 years
Great west conference 6 drafted in the last 10 years
MEAC conference 7 drafted in the last 10 years

    Just to name a few…

Again….in comparison….10 kids in 10 years is puts us in the mix with most of these conferences…

And I’m sure there were more than enough talented Ivy league players over the years that decided to take the 100k jobs immediately their degree earned them rather than giving that up to try to make a roster as a low level draft pick for $1500/week on the practice squad of an NFL team. Should they really be blamed for that..??
