I don't see anything different than what I have seen every game. Maybe a different cast but nothing else will change. That would be too much to expect!
Reno treated this week (during which the players had fall break from classes) as an excuse to overwork them again, just as he gave them no days off after returning from California. His lack of understanding of the importance of rest and recuperation rears its ugly head again and Yale comes out tired and flat. Penn wins 31-17
The idea of having a few days off from classes is to catch up on your school work and sleep. No one needs this more than the football players. If these extra hours were consumed with more practice and more meetings, then Reno is 100% at fault. If this was Football-U than I can see it as those guys don't go to class on any day. But this is Yale and there is no love or slack for sports.
This is 3:22. Do I get some credit for prognostication? I was only off by three points. But actually, if you saw that game, you know it easily could have been 35-3 (it was 28-3 at the end of three). Yale was as underprepared to play that game as a team could be. The offense played like they all met each other (including the coaches) last Tuesday.
It was a flat and boring game. Both sides lacked energy. The difference was the Penn running game. Controlling the ball and clock with running first downs. Why can't we line up in the I or inverted wishbone and power the ball? We have no power running game. That becomes even more obvious with Varga out. This run around unorganized offense is getting tiring.
Yes, this offense is a train wreck right now. And can't use injury as an excuse. Our strong suit is our offensive line, which has been basically intact and injury-free for two years. Stop getting cute and power the ball behind them. Good coaching fits its system to its talent.
The offensive line is the best in Ivy. But that is a different coach. Morris does not know how to game plan and utilize his skill players or sink them with the o-line. That is why the offense looks so disorganized. First step to a fix would be to stop rushing things. Passing game does not work without the running game and the running game does not work without the passing game. You can tell if a coach is any good when his star players are hampered with injuries. So far I have not seen that anything has changed. Obviously the "next man up" philosophy is not going to get it done. It takes a bit more than that.
I see a Yale victory

Y 23, P 22. Cazzetta the difference.

ReplyDeleteBack on track. If Varga and Furman don't play though, all bets are off.

Yale bounces back:

much depends, of course, on whether Varga and Furman play and are healthy enough to play to their usual standards

ReplyDeleteWhat qualifies as overwork. I assume you must have been at the practice.

ReplyDeleteWhy does my prediction keep disappearing?
ReplyDeleteDon't worry 3:22 and 4:38. My spies in Philadelphia tell me Bagnoli is overworking Penn, too, so it should be a wash.
ReplyDeleteI predict we will defeat Harvard in 2048, 38-17.
