Spring practice notes

First of all, I apologize for the lack of updates. I’ve been busy helping with Frozen Four coverage and getting married.
Anyway, I dropped by practice Wednesday. Here’s a link to some notes along with some additional ones below. Please keep in mind head coach Tony Reno still can’t comment on the new recruiting class…
RB Tyler Varga had a remarkable sophomore season last year. The All-Ivy League pick is only getting better. Reno said he’s improved his blocking and pass catching.
“We want to make him a complete back,” Reno said.
WHO ELSE IS IN THE MIX FOR CARRIES?
Well Kahlil Keys pulled a hamstring during winter conditioning so he hasn’t played this spring. Expect him to be in the mix when healthy. Everett Johnson has moved from LB to RB and Reno said he’s been a pleasant surprise so far. Junior Tate Harshbarger and Austin Carter have also gotten touches.
LBs MAKING PROGRESS
Two LBs to keep an eye on: Will Vaughan and Andrew Larkin. Larkin missed last season with an injury. Both have been impressive.
OTHERS LOOKING STRONG…
Kyle White, who has moved from the offensive line to defensive line, WR Avery Lewis and Grant Wallace, and DBs Roger Kilgore and Cole Champion.

Thanks for the update, Chris. Here's hoping you can get out there more often in the next week or so. It's great to have some football news again!

Based on last year, it would seem the "starting five" on the O-line is pretty set for the fall, barring something unforeseen. I would think it will be Carbery and Gavin at the tackles, Chism (who started all last year, I believe) and Longinotti at the guards, and Oppenheimer at center. I think the rest of the crew will be competing for backup spots. Gavin, Carbery, and Oppenheimer are all multiple year starters, and Chism and Longinotti both started last year. As Carbery has started at both tackle and guard it would seem likely he will inherit Roy Collins' spot at RT, Roy being the only senior they lose on the line. I assume that's why Chris's notes mention them looking Kyle White - who backed up Collins at RT last year when Carbery was playing guard - on the defensive side.

They are working on making Varga a complete back? He did just about everything other than the laundry last year! How about working on the d-line and adding some size in the secondary?

Any chance of getting a spring practice wrap-up of some specificity? There's been a real news drought for the thirsty fans.

The Penn State QB is leaving because he won't be the starter. Maybe he'd be better than the other strays being collected.
