Heading into Spring

Here’s a link to some notes off of Wednesday’s Hot Stove luncheon along with some additional tidbits below...

Yale has organized a six-team competition amongst its own players and will compete in various contests on and off the field. Some include community service, academic performance and athletics. It’s based on the point system and will run through spring practice.
The winning team’s reward? A steak dinner.
“It’s been a pretty heated competition,” Reno said. “We want guys to compete all year around.”
Added captain Beau Palin: “We’re pushing ourselves and pushing each other. We’re getting better than the day before. It’s the best offseason I’ve ever been a part of in terms of improvement.”
HEADING WEST
Yale will have a true test before opening Ivy League play this season. The Bulldogs will travel to San Luis Obispo, Calif. to face Cal Poly on Oct. 5 for their third game of the season.
Cal Poly finished the season at 9-3 and was ranked No. 11 in the FCS.
“It’s great for our players, our alumni and it’s great competition for us before Ivy League play. We’re excited about it. It’s good for recruiting, too.”
RENO ON RICE’S RETURN
Former All-Ivy League LB and Yale captain was recently named the Bulldogs outside linebackers coach. He comes back to New Haven after spending a season as a graduate assistant at Georgia Tech.
Rice takes over for Drew Petzing, who took a job as a quality control coach with the Cleveland Browns.
“He’ll bring intensity,” said Reno of Rice. “Guys will be well coached at his position and he’ll do a great job at recruiting. We’re excited to have him back.”
SPRING SCHEDULE
Yale will open its spring session on March 27 and have morning practices on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The annual Blue-White scrimmage will take place on April 20 at 2 p.m. at the Yale Bowl. Yale will honor the 1989 Ivy League championship team.

The first game that Yale plays this September will be against Colgate. It will be their FOURTH game.Is it not time for the Ivy League to eliminate that silly preseason scrimmage and schedule an 11th game?

It's been time for an 11th game for 15 years. The wheels turn very slowly in the IL, if they turn at all. Look how long it took to get a 10th game.

Football, the sport that put the Ivy League on the map, has been allowed to devolve into a national joke.

When is the 2013 Football Prospectus coming out?

You need to get a sense of the presidential lineup and how they feel toward an 11th game. My guess is not enough votes.

Frankly, I like the 10-game season. It takes enough of a toll as it is. What rankles me is that the Ivy Champ does not get to play in the FCS playoffs. This isn't true of *any* other Ivy sport, so it's ridiculously inconsistent.

Granted, since THE GAME is tatamount to a Super Bowl on many levels, this isn't such a big deal for Yale or Harvard, but for everyone else...

    Three Questions:
1.) Will the roster on the website be revised and updated for Spring football?
2.) Will there be a Spring Prospectus as in years past?
3.) When will Rice be substituted for Petzing on the new football website?

  7. You would have to contact the Yale sports department for that info.

I agree with wyldebill...for everyone else, their season is just over. No play off game and no "big" game...unless, of course, they consider their yearly big game against Harvard "THE GAME"??? Still, it's disappointing, I believe the kids would like to be in playoffs...

my question is if Coach Rice is experienced with recruiting the region that Petzing left? Having such a young and inexperienced coach not only in charge of a good recruiting region, but also the linebackers in general, seems like a steep learning curve to me...Let's hope we don't lose out because of it. Hopefully, he will have someone to mentor him.
