I disagree. Yale succeeded against Penn by throwing the same flanker screen 10 times. That won't work against a team prepared for it. Next week should be OK, but we need Williams back by Brown.
We lost our top three quarterbacks. With Whitelaw gone, we are now down to zero. H.furman and K.Taubler are former qb's. Since throwing isnt an option(a good one) with an untrained QB, put the qb in that can run the ball the best. Furman is a WR now, and Taubler is a LB, put them in.
In the words of Ron Vaccaro '04 on the Yale Penn broadcast on Saturday, "Brian Leffler who has had to fight for every minute of playing time makes a big play"
As I indicated previously, Brian was the starter at the beginning of the season and was doing well. Why did he ever have to "fight for every minute of playing time"?
How did a freshman leap frog 2 people to become a starter? Absent of his injury, Leffler is not on the field to make the play.
The game was won with the people that Reno has been trying to cast aside (Cargill, Leffler). Why were people demoted who were performing? That is the question Reno needs to answer.
BTW, I am not discounting Russells contribution, just not blaming Reno for his lack of playing time. Russells passing was much better an accurate than Williams down the field. The swing pass gave me a heart atack everytime.
Bottom line, the team was better without some of Reno's chosen ones. Now if we can only get a few more of them back on the bench.
I for one agree there is so much talent wasting away on the bench and some of that talent are guys that played last year and were starters who were replaced by "Reno's guys" it's never good when a kid goes down with an injury but I can't imagine why anyone would want to see anything different than what we saw with Penn. Russell played like a Mature QB his passing improved as the game went on but more importantly he threw the ball hard and with confidence his running was every bit as good as williams and if you might have noticed not one interception! it looked as if he was the starter! One can't help but think what could have been, what would Yale's season look like today if we had had a Mature QB in the game and all the others that are sitting and currently not playing? I Hope to H that crosses Tony Reno's mind but I won't be holding my breath.
I, for one, agree and even his starters that deserve to start could use a rest once in a while and some fresh legs would help with the running game. There's plenty of untapped talent there.
Williams should have a terrific future, but his multiple interceptions per game and failure to lead the team into the end zone on red zone opportunities have cost Yale at least two games. It's actually not fair to him that he is not ready to be a varsity starter.
Agreed... even the NBC SPORTS Anchor said during the broadcast very few Freshman are prepared or ready to play in a D1 ivy league game and was somewhat amazed Yale had so many, he even said he played some snaps as an ivy freshman and found he really wasn't ready It is careless for Tony Reno to put "His" Freshman in that situation and now those boys are taking some of the blame for the state Yale football is in this season. No kid anywhere will tell a coach no thanks coach I don't want to play! SHAME ON YOU TONY RENO! You have made anything and everything about Yale football all about you... yours and yours alone so here ya go Mr. Wonderful I give you and you alone this season too!
It is sad that more than one college football experience/dream has been ruined by Tony Reno. This is a FACT.
And, the fact that young men have put two or more years into the program only to be disrespected by this coaching staff is amazing. There was a TEAM before Reno came in, regardless of whatever real or perceived deficiencies the prior coaching staff had...That had little to do with the commitment, heart and love for the game that the recruited boys had. This TEAM felt that they had something to offer...and they DID.
I truly hope the current staff learns something from this year. And I'm amazed that Reno - coming from an Ivy background -- didn't GET that these boys came to Yale because they love football and they want a good education. Many - not all - had other opportunities, but they chose Yale because they thought they would get the best of both worlds. That ideal seems to have been swept under the carpet. The "next man in" is not team-building. Everyone is expendable. Especially the upperclassmen.
Good luck. Looks like lots of upperclassmen will be taking hold of the game in the next few weeks (bummer Reno, that must be hard to deal with) ....Finally I'm excited to watch!!!
Reno just has a problem and doesnt understand the head coaches role in morale and team building, especially amongst a group of intellectually superior young men who are motivated by something that he doesnt seem to understand.
The Jr and Sr class this year are getting hosed, and the team is the worst on field performers I have seen in a decade, not because of talent, because of morale, and team unity, and basically, the best players arent on the field. Put in some of the Juniors. The freshmen defensive backs and linebackers are KILLING us, as well as the quarterback.
I like the idea of furman and/or taubler playing qb, possibly go to a run/option offense while they learn the offense. RB's are solid, OLine will do the job.
you came to the dance late.... only one freshman DB playing, Freshman LB got hurt. Corners need some help (no freshman there) LB'S pretty solid safety's good but I would like to see Okano in more at FS (thats your Freshman's place) All in All same song... Reno is showing "his" Freshman favoritism over upperclassmen I hear tell that this week for Columbia there are even MORE Freshman on the chart over the Vet's you would think that after the Penn game Reno might have learned something But with a head as big as his I guess it will take a long time to get through his very thick skull!
A comment on "the commentors" It is obvious some of you got beat up on the playground. Go play an individual sport at a high level and find out what you have to offer. Save the negativity for yourself. Please, stay off the field and out of coaching.
Any idea when we'll know Williams' status? It looked like a separated shoulder, but looks can be deceiving.
ReplyDeleteNot sure it matters. Let's just go with the guys that took us to the promised land yesterday.
ReplyDeleteI disagree. Yale succeeded against Penn by throwing the same flanker screen 10 times. That won't work against a team prepared for it. Next week should be OK, but we need Williams back by Brown.
ReplyDeleteYale's second and third string quarterbacks distinguished themselves and brought Yale victory by throwing NO interceptions.
ReplyDeleteA for next week, Columbia has given every Ivy team they played fits and a very close game!
