I spoke with coach Tony
Reno about Saturday’s scrimmage against Brown, which was closed to both the
public and media. He spoke in general terms and didn’t give much detail. Reno
didn’t have a score and said both teams’ junior varsity players were on the
field by the end of the game.
“It’s still new to
everyone,” said Reno about the offensive and defensive scheme. “We have to get
better at the details of it. We had trouble with blocking schemes, coverage,
blitzing and route running. And that leads to issues. But overall, Reno said,
the team continues to improve.
RB Kahlil Keys said Yale
played at a very high tempo.
“It got them on their
heels,” he said. “And they didn’t have a chance to sub.”
Tony said the biggest
strengths were in the running game, offensive line and defensive line. RBs
Mordecai Cargill and Tyler Varga both busted off runs of around 60 yards.
As for the QB situation,
it’s down to junior John Whitelaw and freshman Eric Williams. The starter will
be named following the team’s final intrasquad scrimmage later this week.
“It’s pretty even,” Reno
said. “Neither has quite grabbed the job yet.”
Sophomore offensive
lineman Will Chism and defensive back Collin Bibb really stood out and played “exceptional”
Saturday.
Senior Philippe Panico
will remain as the Bulldogs starting kicker. He started every game at the
position last season and connected on 8-of-13 FGs and 25-of-31 XP attempts.
Sophomores Kyle Cazzetta
and Parker Toms continue to battle for punting duties.
For those asking for a
depth chart, Reno said one will be released sometime next week.
Be sure to check back Thursday
for a feature on the Bulldogs three-headed monster at RB: Cargill, Varga and
Keys.
As part of the Register’s
200 series, here is a look at Yale’s win over Navy in 1981.
And here’s a feature onHamden Hall QB T.J. Linta. Yale has expressed interest in Linta, whose father,
Joe Linta, is an NFL player agent and a former Bulldog.

ReplyDeleteDid you happen to ask Tony why there is all this secrecy from the media? For all his problems, Tom Williams was totally open to the media, which supported the team and drew more interest from alumni. With a new coach and a promising freshman class there is more curiosity than ever.
I really haven't. I guess it's just his way of doing things.
ReplyDeleteThat curiosity builds more interest which should and will bring more dollars and cents
