Update on Choate players on Yale's radar

Just heard back from Choate football coach Erik Cooper and he gave me the latest on the his players who have been recruited by Yale.

As previously reported on this blog, linebacker/h-back Austin Carter committed to Yale over the weekend. Cooper said that receiver Avery Lewis is visiting Yale this weekend. As for the other two players, quarterback Kyle Nolan out of Branford has committed to Georgetown while offensive lineman Matthew Porter is "more focused on Patriot League and Division 3 options at present" according to Cooper.

Whatever the reality may be, Yale's football website still lists all of Tom Williams's assistant coaches. Perhaps there's a reluctance to show a two-man staff.

I never quite understood why Yale recruits the New England prep schools so heavily. As a former Yale player I cannot remember one impact player coming from one of these schools. Quite frankly, the quality of football being played in these leagues is not high. In my experience these players tend to either quit the team or become role players at best. In fact, the only impact player I can honestly remember doing anything in recent memory has been Matt Polhemus. As a coach I would take tough, hungry public/ catholic school kids any day of the week over prep school kids.

  3. During the process in 2009, Yale did not put up the new staff until everything was official. I would imagine the same thing to happen this year.

As for the prep schools, Roy Collins, Allen Davis and Cameron Sandquist all came from prep schools and are pretty solid players. If Kahlil Keys is as good as advertised, I think he'll have an impact.

CHANDLER HENLEY - CHOATE; ED McCARTHY - FAIRFIELD PREP just off the top of my head. I think they would qualify as IMPACT players. Come on, Man!

I will give you chandler but not Ed McCarthy. When I talk about prep schools I am talking about the $30,000/yr schools that play in leagues amongst themselves (exeter, andover, choate, hotchkiss, deerfield, salisberry, etc.)I'm not talking about Catholic Schools that play in public school leagues (Fairfield Prep, Delbarton, etc.) Many good players, including McCarthy, have come from these schools.

Not sure the “30K per year prep hater” has watched too much football as his betamax must just keep looping the “Harvard beats Yale” movie over and over---but from just little ol’ CT recently the prep school kids that have excelled include Kevin Decker—Brunswick School---UNH---Walter Payton Award finalist---Björn Werner---Salisbury School---Defensive MVP of Florida State, Silas Redd--King Lowe---Penn State—Heisman hopeful for next season, and UnderArmour All American. Take the class warfare to CNN and Fox News and off the athletic blogs that we all enjoy in our free time away from work and real life.

Anyone have any staff updates? Has Reno hired anyone new? Will Flanders go back to dc?

    To Posts Two & Five:
The New England "preppies" being recruited by Yale have, by and large, made their football bones elsewhere. They're at Choate and its ilk to bulk up their bodies and their board scores and to acclimate themselves to the harsh climate and the strange mores of New England.
Furthermore, your 30K figure is doubly misleading. It wouldn't begin to cover the full tab, and it doesn't take into account the generous scholarship aid on offer at most of these schools.

Harvard, Yale and Princeton steering kids to Exeter, Choate and Lawrenceville etc. is the Ivy equivalent of red-shirting; putting the calves in a fattening pen for a year.
