Earlier today I reported that former Yale defensive coordinator Don Brown was expected to be named the Bulldogs' new football coach later in the week.
Well, it's amazing what a difference a few hours can make. Sources from Yale and UConn confirmed that Brown was offered the job but withdrew his name from consideration tonight.
It's eerily familiar to what happened in 2008 as Brown was emerging as the frontrunner for the Yale job only to withdraw his name from consideration.
What I was unable to find out is if there was a snag at some point in the negotiations but it seems to me as if something like that could very well have gone down.
Yale has interviewed former Yale assistant coach Tony Reno, Lehigh offensive coordinator Dave Cecchini and Georgetown head coach Kevin Kelly. There was a recent report that Yale had reached out to former UCLA head coach Karl Dorrell.
Obviously we will continue to follow this story and hope for everybody's sake that this saga is over quickly.
Players just informed that Brown pulled his name.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the story behind the latest fiasco? How could he have done it again?
ReplyDeletePffft. Good riddance. Maybe if the next coach doesn't work out Brown can apply again. And drop out again.
ReplyDeleteBrown is a journeyman.
ReplyDeleteIn the long run this is better for Yale.
May we assume he wanted more freedom of action recruiting-wise than Yale was willing to grant him? I understand his success elsewhere has depended on the school giving him the freedom to recruit who he wants and get those recruits in.
ReplyDeleteFool me once - shame on you!
ReplyDeleteFool me twice - shame on me!
This does not make Tom Beckett, already unpopular with alumni, look very competent...
Better to get a promising coach who is dying to coach at Yale.
Time for Tony Reno. He'll do a great job; I have no doubt.
ReplyDeleteWhat ever happened with Brian Polian ?
ReplyDeleteGreat recruiter.......
Reports are that Polian is heading to Texas A&M
ReplyDeleteTony Reno is the man for the job. They shouldn't waste any more time.
ReplyDeletePlease. Tony Reno would be wrong. He isn't even a coordinator.
ReplyDeleteThe Lehigh OC would be an excellent choice.
My son was being recruited by Yale, he doesn't have an offer but spoke with his recruiter about a week ago. At this point I'm not sure I would even encourage him to pursue the opportunity if he were fortunate enough to land an offer at this late date.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how many other recruits and their families are feeling this way.
To the parent of the recruit: don't listen to all the negativity on this board. Wait until the dust settles, and the new staff is in place. Yale is a special place, and the team is a special group of guys.
ReplyDeleteI agreed with the advice given in the last comment. Yale is still hoping to have a coach in place by this week and I would make your college decision based on the university and not the coaching staff. If Yale is the best place for your son, he should go there or head to whichever school best fits all of his needs.
ReplyDeleteWhat if one of the kid's "needs" is to play for a solid football program that doesn't fire the coach every 3 years if he doesn't "beat harvard"?
ReplyDeleteMy son plays for Yale. His experience at the University has been simply phenomenal. It is a special place. My son has grown, he's enjoyed almost every classmate and class, the residential college system and especially his teammates. Your son should go there for his education; not for football. But he'll be playing with a great group on the football field, as well. No chance I would tell my son to attend an inferior university because the Yale football coach resigned. That's the ultimate in short-sightedness.
ReplyDeleteFor some, it might not be easy to wait until the dust settles. Believe me, other teams in the league are putting pressure on kids right now to make a commitment or risk losing their spot.
ReplyDeleteI was the original poster about my son being recruited. The other twist is that he is also being recruited by Georgetown which makes all of this very interesting. I've been thru the process with two others and realize that with no offer from Yale right now the chances aren't good one is coming with the new head coach.
ReplyDeleteYale is an outstanding institution but at this late date in the recruiting process it is very very difficult to see if you "fit" with the new staff. So much of your time is spent with the football players and staff that a quick decision is not an easy one unless you "feel" it on an official visit.
It's the oldest recruiting trick in the book. If your kids are looking at Yale and the other schools know it, they'll say they need a decision from you now. They are simply trying to take advanatage of the situation and put unfair pressure on you to make a quick decision because they know it will favor them in the short term. If they really want your son, they'll give you extra time for Yale to get its situation sorted out. Frankly, I'd call them on it and tell them you need more time. Good luck.
