As the commitments began rolling in over the last week or two, it seemed as if more Connecticut players than normal were headed to Ivy League programs.
Hey, who could blame Ivy recruiters for seeking out Nutmeg State prospects since in the 2010 season Connecticut natives finished:
1st and 3rd in passing efficiency (Sean Brackett and Billy Ragone)
3rd and 5th in rushing (Alex Thomas and Ragone)
3rd in receiving yards (Andrew Kennedy)
1st, 5th and 9th in total offense (Brackett, Ragone, Thomas)
So I did a little checking and unless I missed somebody, I found 11 Connecticut natives committed to Ivy League schools. I am not including kids from Connecticut prep schools who grew up in another state on this list.
RB Jimmy Connelly, Stonington Brown
DE Chris Coyne, Staples Yale
QB Seth DeValve, Manchester Princeton
RB Jonathan Esposito, Conard Princeton
DB L.J. Hunt, St. Joseph Yale
TE Mitch King, Valley Regional Penn
DB Peter McDonough, Darien Cornell
LB Patrick Murray, Staples Yale
OL Ryan Peloquin, St. Paul Princeton
OL Chris Valenti, Bethel Harvard
OL Jeff Winthrop, St. Paul's (N.H.) Dartmouth
*-Winthrop is from Roxbury
So how does that stack up to previous years? Well, there were nine freshmen, nine sophomores, three juniors and 11 seniors on Ivy League rosters during this past season so I guess I wasn't imagining things.
